    This paper presents contemporary trends and challenges around power quality in the context of the development of “intel¬ligent” power systems (smart grids) and distributed generation. The authors of the paper, who are members of the Electric Power Quality and Utilization Team of AGH University, share their experience from participation in scientific research, experimental development, and educational activities conducted through national and international projects. They were related to the cooperation with power compa¬nies and utilities (transmission (TSO) and distribution (DSO) system operators), industry, and institutions operating for the energy mar¬ket. Some selected research topics are briefly presented.
