Item type:Doctoral Dissertation, Access status: Open Access , Integrated impact assessment of emissions from the Polish energy sector for determination of the optimal mix of energy generation and pollution control technologies(Data obrony: 2009) Wyrwa, Artur
Wydział Energetyki i PaliwThe objective of this Thesis is twofold: scientific and practical. The scientific objective is to build an Integrated Assessment Model for determination of the optimal mix of energy generation and pollution control technologies for the Polish power sector. The model combines the features of the Impact-Pathway and the Energy-Economic models and is built in the General Algebraic Modelling System. Each boiler of the power system is considered individually. Such generation unit- oriented approach makes it possible to estimate individual emissions and costs, both external and internal. A special effort has been put on developing the SO2 source-receptor matrix for Poland, used in analysis of plant location. The main practical objective is to provide a support tool for decision making in developing the Polish power sector. Influence of internalisation of the external costs due to $SO_{2}, NO_{X}$, PM and $CO_{2}$ emissions on the shape of the Polish energy sector in 2020 was assessed. The results show that, even with full internalisation of external costs (including climate costs) coal will remain the main fuel used for power generation in Poland. With the assumed cost parameters, the ultra critical pulverised fuel technology clearly dominates in power generation. An important observation is that the model suggests to use pure biomass in smaller CHP units, rather than co-firing it in power plants of large capacities.
