Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaKaolin group minerals exhibit relatively low sorption capacity, however their modification may improve this property. The objective of this work was to (i) modify kaolinites of different structural order and (ii) to test their sorption properties towards heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn). The modification procedure involved dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) intercalation and afterwards the interlayer grafting of diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA) was carried out. The obtained materials were used for the sorption equilibrium experiments of cations in the 0,005-10 mmol/L concentration range and the kinetic experiments performed in a multi-element system for 1 mmol/L concentration. The structural and chemical analysis (XRD, FTIR, CHNS) of the obtained materials confirmed the formation of a stable kaolinite-aminoalcohol grafted compounds. In most cases the improvement of sorption capacity for the tested materials was observed, wherein the most efficient sorption was observed for the Cu(II) ions. The results of the research show that the sorption improvement was due to expansion of the kaolinite interlayer space and the metal complexation by amine group present in the molecules of introduced aminoalcohols.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Improved copper sorption on grafted kaolinites of different structural order(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2014) Koteja, Anna; Matusik, JakubKaolin group minerals exhibit relatively low sorption capacity as the migration of ions and their sorption in the interlayer space is not possible. The ions attraction is limited to the particles faces and edges through surface complexation and ion-exchange mechanisms. The ongoing research on functionalized kaolinites enabled to synthesize new nanomaterials with possible applications in industry and environmental protection.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Na-montmorillonite modified with ammonium salts and azobenzene as a photoactive nanomaterial(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Koteja, Anna; Matusik, JakubModification of inorganic solid structures (e.g. minerals) with organic molecules is a constantly developed topic in material sciences.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Preparation and characterization of azobenzene-smectite photoactive mineral nanomaterials(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Koteja, Anna; Matusik, JakubSmectites are 2:1 layered minerals built of one octahedral sheet located between two tetrahedral sheets. The layer charge derived from the isomorphic substitutions in the mineral structure is compensated by the interlayer cations.
