Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Development of karst phenomena for geotourism in the Moravian Karst (Czech Republic)(2011) Migoń, PiotrThe Moravian Karst in the south-eastern part of the Czech Republic has considerable potential for the development of geotourism. It is characterized by outstanding geodiversity, revealed in abundant, surface and subterranean karst landforms, as well as protracted history of karst evolution which can be traced back to the Mesozoic. An additional value is provided by the presence of cultural heritage, related to exploitation and processing of mineral resources genetically linked to the karst environment. The significance of this area is further enhanced by easy access to karst landforms and phenomena. Five caves, each of different morphology, can be visited. A dense network of educational trails, marked paths, forestry and field-access roads allows the visitor to reach all interesting features of karst morphology.Item type:Book, Access status: Restricted , Geomorfologia(Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN, 2013) Migoń, PiotrItem type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Geothermal fields of New Zealand in tourism industry - the case of complementary assets and competitive products(2015) Pijet-Migoń, Edyta; Migoń, PiotrGeothermal phenomena in the North Island of New Zealand have been a basis of tourism industry since the mid-19th century. Their highlights include geysers, hot springs, mud pools, steam vents, craters, and various silica deposition features. Five geothermal sites, Te Puia Whakarewarewa, Waimangu, Wai-O-Tapu, Orakei Korako, and Craters of the Moon, are subjects of this study which is focused on interrelated issues of diversity, accessibility, and interpretation. The sites are sufficiently different in terms of natural phenomena to be perceived as complementary, offering jointly a comprehensive picture of geothermal phenomena. However, cooperation between their properties hardly exists. In promotion, unusual scenic values and record features are emphasized, whereas more in-depth interpretation is limited. There are opportunities to enhance educational components of each site, so that they can offer experience and learning rather than experience only and become fully developed geotourist destinations.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Granite tors of Waldviertel (Lower Austria) as sites of geotourist interest(2015) Michniewicz, Aleksandra; Różycka, Milena; Migoń, PiotrGranites of the South Bohemian Pluton are among the main rocks in the region of Waldviertel in the northern part of Lower Austria. The overall topography is gently rolling, with higher elevations and medium-altitude mountainous relief present only in the south-western part. Tors are the most characteristic residual landforms and occupy different settings, from mountain tops to valley floors. They vary in shapes and dimensions, with castle koppies and boulder clusters being most common. Many tors host well-developed microforms such as weathering pits, karren, runnels, and flared slopes. Balanced rocks are among the highlights of the region. Because of good access residual granite landforms of Waldviertel are well suited to be developed as geosites and geotourist destinations, but there is clearly a deficit of explanation and interpretation. In this paper 15 representative tors are presented, tourist infrastructure is summarized, and a thematic one-day drive is proposed.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Not simply volcanoes - The Geoheritage of the Cretaceous System in the Land of the Extinct Volcanoes Geopark, West Sudetes (SW Poland)(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Migoń, Piotr; Pijet-Migoń, EdytaVolcanic geoheritage is emphasized as the main asset and distinctive characteristic of the Land of Extinct Volcanoes Geopark in the West Sudetes (SW Poland). However, the geoheritage values of the region are not limited to the legacy of ancient volcanism but include various other elements. This paper explores the contribution of geosites that expose sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous age and landforms developed upon these rocks. Six localities from the Geopark area, included in the comprehensive regional inventory of geosites, are presented. They represent natural and man-made sandstone outcrops and show, among others, lithological variations, small- and large-scale post-sedimentary deformation structures, landforms arising from differential weathering (rock shelters, honeycombs), boulder fields and a sandstone xenolith in volcanic rocks. Next, five localities from outside the Geopark, but still within the Pogórze Kaczawskie region, are described. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of both groups is attempted, and the results show that, in general, geosites within the Geopark rank higher. However at least two from the other group also have significant geotourist potential. Finally, a brief comparative analysis with other parts of the Sudetes, where Cretaceous sedimentary rocks occur, is offered.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Visitors' background as a factor in geosite evaluation. The case of Cenozoic volcanic sites in the Pogórze Kaczawskie region, SW Poland(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2014) Różycka, Milena; Migoń, PiotrThe paper presents a new approach to geosite assessment in which individual preferences and needs of visitors with different backgrounds, i.e. knowledge of Earth science and interest in geoheritage, are taken into account. The aim of the study is to analyze how perspectives of visitors, split into three different categories (viz. geo-expert, interested visitor and unaware visitor), may affect evaluation of geosites. Parallel evaluations of a group of 11 geosites in the Pogórze Kaczawskie region representing mid-Cenozoic volcanism have been carried out and their results compared. Emphasis on different criteria resulted in considerable changes in the positions of certain geosites in the rankings. Based on the assumption that attractiveness of a geosite may be also perceived variously depending on the season, the attempt has been made to include ‘seasonal factor’, i.e. the role of vegetation that obscures the visibility of geological and geomorphological features, in the assessment procedure. Shifts in position of individual geosites were generally minor but this may be related to a small sample used in this pilot study.
