Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , A preliminary assessment of soil sulphur contamination and vegetations in the vicinity of former boreholes on the afforested post-mine site Jeziórko(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Likus-Cieślik, Justyna; Pietrzykowski, Marcin; Śliwińska-Siuśta, Martyna; Krzaklewski, Wojciech; Szostak, MartaThe work aims to assess the degree of soil sulphur contamination of the various abandoned reclamation efficiencies, within the microhabitats formed in the »Jeziórko« inoperative boreholes of former sulphur-mining areas. These areas have been reclaimed to the forest. Three plot categories were initially determined in the post-mining areas: category D – degraded, i.e. ineffectively reclaimed and unsuccessfully afforested plots, with low cover-abundance or complete lack of vegetation, category (P) – pine stands and category (B) – birch stands successfully aff orested. Afterwards, four circular plots were defined within each of the determined categories (4 replications, i.e. a total of 12 plots). For each plot, cover-abundance (according to the Braun-Blanquet scale) and dominant herbaceous vegetation species, tree species and stand density were determined. Height (Ht) and diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements were taken, and a vitality assessment was completed, according to the IUFRO classification. Soil samples were collected at each plot, in five points, at two different depths (0–5 cm and 5–40 cm). Finally, laboratory analysis was undertaken. Soil properties such as texture, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), hydrolytic acidity (Hh), the contents of soil organic carbon SOC, total nitrogen TN, total sulphur TS, and exchangeable cations ($Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^{+}$ , $Na^{+}$) were determined. Soils from the D plot category were characterised by high sulphur contamination, excess salinity (EC) and strong acidity in top soil. These parameters indicated that completed neutralization was not performed effectively at certain sites. Pine (P) and birch (B) stands categories showed good growth rates and soil parameters, indicating that the reclamation treatments were completed successfully.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Ocena zaopatrzenia sosny zwyczajnej (Pinus sylvestris L.) w składniki pokarmowe w warunkach zwałowiska zewnętrznego KWB »Bełchatów«(2007) Bajorek-Zydroń, Katarzyna; Krzaklewski, Wojciech; Pietrzykowski, MarcinThe aim of the work was to assess the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) nutrient supply in the first age group (of up to 20 years) growing on the top of the external slope in the Bełchatów lignite mine and in managed forests in the vicinity of the dump. The research was conducted on 60 experimental plots (10x10 m) in a chronosequence of 5-7, 9-11 and 12-14 years, with 10 repetitions for each age group on the slope and in managed tree stands. It was found that nitrogen was the most deficient element in the Bełchatów dump. Its average content ranged from 0.8 to 0.9%. Based on the results of pine high and needle length measurements it was established that satisfactory growth of the trees from this species took place when nitrogen content in its assimilation apparatus was at least 1.0% N. The content of other biogenes important for trees (Ca, Mg, K, P, S) was considered satisfactory in pine needles, however the phosphate content in the slope was visibly lower than in the assimilated material of pines from forests in the vicinity of the dump. The proportions of individual macroelements in pine needles were satisfactory and the mean content appeared in quantitative series characteristic for the species: N K Ca P Mg. The obtained results show that with the exception of nitrogen, the initial soils of the dump provide the majority of nutrients for the Scots pine introduced as part of the reclaim process.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Perspektywy pozyskania energii z biomasy drzewostanów na zrekultywowanym zwałowisku zewnętrznym KWB »Bełchatów«(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2009) Pietrzykowski, Marcin; Socha, Jarosław; Krzaklewski, WojciechThe aim of the work was to quantify the biomass, and potential for renewable energy production, of a stand of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), in the first age group (up to 20 years), that grow on the external slope of the »Bełchatów« lignite mine. The results were compared to managed forests in the vicinity of the slope. The research was conducted on 8 experimental plots (10 x 10 meters) in two trophy variants (quaternary loamy sands and tertiary pyrytic strata after neutralization) using 12-19 year old tree stands, with 4 replications for each variant. One control plot was arranged in managed tree stands adjacent to the mine. It was found that post-mining sites, compared natural site, have an average 30% potential for biomass production and carbon sequestration. The range of tree stands' biomass, on the lignite mine slope, was 8 to 40 Mg ha/-1, and average 25 Mg ha/-1 dry biomass. Potential production of renewable energy was estimated to be 80 to 400 kJha/-1 x 10/6, and average 240 kJ x 10/6ha/-1. Total energy potential on the external slope plateau (approximately 300 ha) was 24 000 to 12 000 and average 130 000 kJ x 10/6 ha/-1. The results show the potential to manage post-mining sites, as tree plantations for renewable energy production.
