    World progress in the use of renewable energy sources and development in new technologies, also very significant in the use of solar energy require updated information because rapid development in this field. The purpose of this work was to gather data from scientific research, industry, economy and create a handbook of current knowledge and status of photovoltaic. This work contains the core principles and important aspects of current technologies connected with the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy. The primary features of solar radiation, origin and potential resources of energy are included. This paper is structured first to describing general to specific methods of harnessing solar energy worldwide and provides examples of systems currently in use. Topics of photovoltaic modules and cells are explained as well. The final part is dedicated to present status harnessing solar power, analysis of cost and photovoltaic market. Further addressed in an example of economic profitability in Poland and future predictions.
