    The paper discusses the physical basics related to pressure in the Earth and presents commonly used definitions and units. It also describes the processes that affect the overpressure, especially the compaction process, the minerals and rock transformation (under the high temperature and stress) and hydrocarbons occurrence. Then, on the bases of well logging data from Barnet Shale basin and Gulf of Mexico the pore pressure was calculated. The results from these two locations were analysed and compared. In conclusions, the factors that may affect the incorrect reservoir pressures assessment were discussed.
