Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , An alternative 3D modeling approach investigation for Electromagnetic (EM) and Transient Electro-Magnetic (TEM) data of a high temperature geothermal field(Data obrony: 2010-07-30) Bryła, Urszula
Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThis thesis project is focused on building a 3D model of MT-TEM data at the Krafla high temperature geothermal field in Iceland. Another main objective was to develop a work flow that could be applied to other geothermal areas und their understanding of MT-TEM data set in combination with other field data. In order to achieve a 3D model of the MT-TEM data set and Krafla´s subsurface resistivity structures, a work flow was developed using Petrel, Schlumberger´s 3D geological modeling software. Two approaches have been tested to generate a 3D model, where the first approach resulted in an overly simplified and not very well comparing model. The results and learning of the first trial, lead to the second approach, where a 3D model was developed with a detailed data analysis, adjusted modeling processes in Petrel, and especially an alternative setup of the input data. Four 3D models have been obtained, two for each approach. Model based on Kriging interpolation algorithm and more advanced approach gives the most reasonable result and the best ability to compare with existed interpretations. This 3D model shows irregular structure with very low resistivity 5 ?m what may indicate magma body like a source of feeding a shallow reservoir beneath Krafla.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , City, countryside and nature as discursive devices used to strengthen the national identity in Icelandic cinematography(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2014) Konefał, Sebastian JakubSince its inception the Icelandic film industry has used the strategy of combining telluric elements with nationalistic narratives. In many films one may also find visual structures that can be linked with the »tourist gaze«- the term as we know it from the texts of John Urry. Despite a focus on some unique qualities of Icelandic nature and its cultural heritage (that can be attractive to foreign viewers) the specificity of cinematic production processes on the island belong to the structure of local, national cinema. Moreover, the 1980s, considered as the time of the rebirth of the Icelandic film industry and its rapid modernization, are full of films containing conservative or leftist telluric topics which are difficult for foreign audiences to understand. A new, transnational quality of Icelandic film features began with the film debut of Friðrik Þór Friðriksson in 1987. His fusion of modernist and postmodernist plots has encouraged other filmmakers to start the process of re-interpretation of the classic narrative structures, and to render the ironic demystification of some nationalistic themes.
Powstanie Blue Lagoon i wpływ pochodzącej stamtąd wody termalnej na człowieka stanowi punkt wyjściowy do opisu doświadczeń Islandii w wykorzystaniu wód geotermalnych w kosmetologii.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Emancypacja religijna a percepcja roli kobiety w sytacji migracyjnej na przykładzie polskich migrantek w Islandii(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Koralewska, IngaAccording to my research, not only migrants’ understanding of religiosity changes in migratory situation, but also the understanding of their agency in this process. Migrants position themselves as active agents and individually define their religiosity anew. As was stated, their new religiosity is individual and not institutional. There are certain grounds for supposing, that migratory experience plays a vital role in the process of religious emancipation. Goal of the paper is to answer the question whether migratory situation, apart from being a source of religiosity change, contributes also to change in attitudes towards gender roles in society. The answer is based on qualitative research conducted in years 2012–2015 in Iceland.Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , Feasibility of vertical heat exchangers in low-temperature areas in Iceland with Hólmavík as a use case(Data obrony: 2018-09-20) Mandera, Maria; Kubik, Filip

Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThe project being the basis of the thesis was made entirely in Iceland during a student exchange at the last semester of the master program. In cooperation with the Blue La goon spa (BL) has been selected (among many available methods) the best way of purification $H_{2}S$ from geothermal gas from HS Orka . Then was created the on - site installation , at the BL Research and Development Center, allowing filtration of the gas and the measurement of efficiency in the real conditions . Removal of $H_{2}S$ helps to avoid corr osion of the other elements, through which the gas flows, and allows to obtain a practically uncontaminated $CO_{2}$ (which is being used in the algae bioreactor ) . It is also an important aspect for reducing emission of this toxic gas ses ( $CO_{2}$ and $H_{2}S$ ) to the atmosphere.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Między utopią turyzmu a antyutopią nieautentyczności - trzy filmowe podróże po Islandii(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2011) Konefał, Sebastian JakubThe road movie is a genre associated with the American counterculture breakthrough of the late sixties, which both criticised the American way of life and in a sophisticated way also strengthened the capitalistic system. Icelandic road movie uses the semantics and syntactic known from the American productions by combining them with national and transnational components. Marked by irony, the postmodern perspective of such movies as Júlíus Kemp’s Blossi/810551, Fridrik Fridriksson’s Cold Fever and Sólveig Anspach’s Back Soon may be read as a visual invitation to get acquainted with the touristic utopian image of Iceland. However, the close reading of these productions can also indicate that they may be regarded as cultural texts that attempt to deconstruct the inauthentic images of the utopian island.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Petrogeothermal energy resources within low-temperature areas of Iceland(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Sowiżdżał, Anna; Chmielowska, AnnaIceland remains one of the leading countries in the field of the utilization of geothermal energy worldwide. Despite its knowledge and tremendous experience in the exploitation of mostly high-temperature geothermal energy resources (water and steam), it has been interested in the possibility of harnessing heat from hot rock formations with the implementation of the Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS). This paper presents the main outcomes of the feasibility study of EGS technology within the low-temperature area of the country. It includes broad geological research that constitutes the background for finding a suitable site for an EGS installation and to determine the local thermal parameters together with rock characteristics. To calculate the amount of heat stored within the preordained HDR formation and ascertain that the deployment of the EGS within the lowtemperature area of Hólmavík town (NW Iceland) is plausible, the term of static resources of energy was applied. Considering the geological issue, it emerged that within the low-temperature areas of Iceland, there are excellent lithological (mainly porous lava layers) as well as thermal conditions (relatively high heat flow and geothermal gradient values) for the implementation of EGS technology for providing heat for small district heating networks. The amount of energy stored within the designed rock formation turned out to be significant and more than sufficient to cover the energy demands of Hólmavík town. The authors also emphasize the importance of running several exchange programs between Polish and Icelandic research and academic centers, with the indication of possible benefits for the Polish geothermal energy sector.
Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , Study of surplus energy utilization generated in intermittent power plants for energy storage in district heating system in the Westfjords, Iceland(Data obrony: 2018-09-20) Mathews, Kamil
Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaIn this study the system combining wind turbines, district heating network and thermal energy storage was proposed and examined for the instance of the Westfjords, Iceland. This approach is set to mitigate the negative impact of unstable renewable energy sources and manage the generated surpluses. The short review of the current state of energy sector in Iceland was provided to present local conditions. Wind potential in the described area was estimated as high and compared with average wind turbine generation in European Union. In addition, long term correlation between power production and demand in district heating network was proven. It is assessed that roughly 60% of consumed energy could be supplied by introducing wind turbines to existing electric and oil district heating system. Moreover, this share can be increased by adding thermal energy storage. Finally, some recommendations basing on this project were given to Polish energy market.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Study of wind power utilization in district heating systemsin the Westfjords, Iceland(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Mathews, Kamil; Sowiżdżał, AnnaSome Renewable Energy Sources (RES), such as wind power, are often regarded as intermittent. That means they are not available on demand, but rather depend on external conditions e.g. such as the weather. In order to manage these resources, it is advised to combine them with energy storage or other energy sectors, what is known as »sector coupling«. This approach is set to mitigate the negative impact of unstable renewable energy sources and manage the generated surpluses. In this study, a system combining wind turbines, district heating network and short-term thermal energy storage was proposed and examined for the instance of the Westfjords, Iceland. Ísafjörður, Patreksfjörður, Bolungarvík and Flateyri are the exemplary communities with existing district heating networks, chosen to investigate the implementation of the system. A short review of the current state of the energy sector in Iceland was provided to present the local conditions. Wind potential in the described area was estimated as high in comparison with average wind turbine generation in the European Union and a few instances of wind turbines placement were analyzed in this study. For locations close to the district heating net-work, a long-term correlation between power generation and usage was proven. However, locating wind turbines in places with better wind conditions, provides stable output and a similar amount of energy produced by fewer generators.Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , The analysis of possibilities of using Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in low-temperature areas in Iceland for providing heat for small district heating networks(Data obrony: 2016-09-08) Drabik, Anna
Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThis thesis presents the knowledge and experience gained during the author’s stay in Keilir Institute of Technology in Iceland. Due to the twofold shape of this desideration, it is artificially divided into two parts, the first more theoretical and the second concerning the project that was run in Iceland. It includes the introduction of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), as well as its development and research. Also characteristic of Iceland is being discussed together with the utilisation of the geothermal resources within the country. The project section concerns the case study of Hólmavik town in Westfjords region. Mainly the geological aspect as well as tectonics is taken into consideration and static resources of petrogeothermal energy are determined for two different scenarios. As the effect, it is shown that from geological point of view, implementation of EGS technology in such town as Hólmavik in Iceland might be plausible. Nevertheless, both technological and economic aspects need to be determined for the complete feasibility study of EGS within low-temperature areas in Iceland.Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , The concept of the geothermal district heating system for dispersed settlement on the example of the town of Holmavik in Iceland(Data obrony: 2016-09-08) Ciapała, Bartłomiej Krzysztof
Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThe thesis provides two concepts of providing geothermal heat to all kinds of building in the Holmavik town (Westfjords, Iceland), that is devoid of sufficient typical geothermal resources. Environmental and anthropogenic backgrounds, local conditions and steps of design were presented together with comparison of proposed systems.Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , Walory geoturystyczne okolic Skaftafell i Jökulsárlón w Parku Narodowym Vatnajökull na Islandii(Data obrony: 2016-12-15) Ratka, Adriana
