Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaMariupolite is an extremely interesting alkaline rock, appearing within the Oktiabrski Massif at the Azowski Sea in the vicinity of Mariupol (SE Ukraine). Microscopic examination in transmitted light and X-ray analysis were used to recognize the mineralogical and petrographic characteristics of mariupolite. The Scanning Electron Microscopis observations (SEM-EDS) were also applied to characterize the solid inclusions found in aegirine crystals. Mariupolites mainly consist of albite, nepheline, aegirine, sodalite and secondary of fluorite, natrolite, cancrinite, britholite, pyrochlore, microcline and biotite. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaIn the present M.Sc. dissertation the results of mineralogical and gemmological investigations of sodalite enriched mariupolite samples from Oktiabrski Massif in SE Ukraine were presented. The main goal of the research was to describe the relations between sodalite and its adjacent phases, characterize some mineral inclusion in this blue stone, calculate its formula and at last but not least to make an attempt to define its origin. In order to investigate the sodalite, a number of methods were applied. Microscopic observations in transmitted light, scanning electron microscopic studies with chemical analyses SEM-EDS, and electron microprobe research were used for examinations of the 4 thin section specimens. The transmitted light observations revealed that sodalite contacts directly with plagioclase, nepheline and natrolite. SEM-EDS analyses enabled to identify numerous inclusionsin sodalite: i.e. albite, aegirine, nepheline, potassium feldspar, annite, pyrochlore, zirconium, britholite-(Ce). The EMPA analyses of sodalite revealed that its free from fluorine and strontium, whereas its main structural admixtures are represented by iron, zinc, sulphur, and calcium. Finally, based on the results obtained, two mechanisms of sodalite origin were proposed: a conversion of nepheline and/or albite into sodalite.
