Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Zarys budowy geologicznej Kordyliery Zachodniej południowego Peru(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2008) Paulo, AndrzejTremendous cross section of lithosphere is exposed in the walls of Rio Colca Canyon 120 km long and 1-3 high. Rio Colca begins at the edge of Altiplano and on the way to Pacific incises deeply into the Western Cordillera, then builds vast dejection cone at its foothills covering metamorphic Arequipa massif. Western Cordillera forms the most elevated horst of this segment of the Andes surmounted by dozens of huge stratovolcanoes. It is largely built of epicontinental Jurassic and Cretaceous formations, volcanic and detritic continental Cenozoic formations, and several Upper Cretaceous - Neogene intrusions. Pre-Pliocene strata are folded. Five compressive phases since Late Creataceous differing by azimuth of fold axes, strong uplift since Late Miocene and relevant fractures filled in part by ore veins and volcanic necks evidence rotation of the regional strain field.
