In thesis characterized the area of the Matilda River valley paying attention to the state of environmental quality in the site of investigation. Work presents the key information about the aquatic environment and some heavy metals, their geochemical properties and forms of binding. The parameters influencing the mobility of metals in the aquatic environment were characterized. The research area and sampling methodology were described. Extraction of heavy metals ($Zn, Cd$ and $Pb$) by BCR method allows separating their chemical forms. Very high level of metal content in sediments was found and a very large proportion of their potentially mobile forms in the whole content of the analyzed elements were observed. Metals in these forms are easily re-mobilized and show a high level of migration in the surrounding environment. Based on the results, the sediments of the Matilda river valley was classified as adversely affecting the living organisms.
