    Soft Istebna sandstone in the area SE of Wieliczka and its economic siginificance

    The purpose of this study was to recognize actual state of natural exposures and abandoned quarries of Istebna sandstone in the area SE of Wieliczka, the district of Myślenice, Little Poland Voivodship. Istebna sandstone is yellow-rusty or grey-white sandstone of various grain sizes, mainly medium-grained, and thick-bedded. It has good mechanical properties and was used to build parts of several important monuments (e.g. arcades of the Cloth Hall in Cracow) and great number of wayside shrines in Wieliczka region. Geological database of its inventory in selected area was generated by using remote sensing method. The investigation reveals that excavation of Istebna sandstone is not satisfactory.
