Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Amazonian Dark Earths in the context of pre-Columbian settlements(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2014) Golińska, BeataImportant information about pre-Columbian Amazonian settlement and economy provide Amazonian Dark Earths (ADE), black or brown soils characterized by the presence of charcoal in high concentrations, with highly elevated nutrients and organic matter and higher pH level. Usually ADE are related to large concentrations of ceramics, stone artifacts and animal remains. The main factor for the initiation of ADE formation was the long-lasted, fully sedentary pre-Columbian settlement. Its size and a form can be correlated with traces of historical human habitation. Thus, these sites can reflect the social organization of a specific group. Therefore, ADE studies can bring much valuable information concerning pre-Columbian settlement in Amazonia.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Anthropogenic sediments from facultative lagoons of the Konstancin-Jeziorna sewage treatment facility and their usability for soil recultivation(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Kostrz-Sikora, Paulina; Bojakowska, Izabela; Wołkowicz, Stanisław; Dobek, Przemysław; Lech, Dariusz; Narkiewicz, WandaThe sewage treatment facility of a paper mill at Konstancin-Jeziorna was opened to process industrial and domestic wastewater. After closure of that mill, the sewage treatment facility had to be rebuilt and modernized. Therefore, it was necessary to analyse the chemical and phase composition of the sediments from facultative lagoons used for biological treatment of wastewater. Eight samples of sediments were taken to identify a general phase composition by X-ray diffraction and ten to determine concentrations of selected main and trace elements with the use of ICP-AES and AMA methods.The analyses showed that the sediments consisted of over 90% of mineral fraction, mainly kaolinite, calcite, and quartz and also neomorphic smithsonite. They contained low quantities of Hg, Cd, Co and Mo, and elevated concentrations of Zn, Ba, Mn and Sr. Comparisons of the obtained mean values with admissible concentrations of metals, as defined by Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 9 September 2002, showed that the mean concentrations of As, Sn, Co, Mo and Ni (and also of Hg and Cr in the southern lagoon) met quality standards for soils in areas under protection (group A). Mean concentrations of Pb (both lagoons), Ba, Cu, Cd (northern lagoon) as well as Cr and Hg (southern lagoon) in sediments are higher. However, they still meet standards for areas usable for agricultural and other purposes (group B). The highest concentrations were recorded for Zn, Cd, Cu and Ba in samples from the southern lagoon. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThe aim of this work is a description of uncompacted embankments on the Old Town area in Cracow. The following master’s thesis consists of two parts. The first part of it provides information on the geological structure of Cracow as well as its immediate vicinities, the structure of lithologic layers, tectonics and land relief of Cracow, the substratum of the Cracow Old Town along with its geological structure and a description of anthropogenic soils. In the second part, the results obtained from drilling identification in uncompacted embankments were presented on the maps. For this purpose, mapping and graphics software such as Surfer 8 and CorelDRAW was used. Also the geological – engineering records taken from various documentations and archives have been herein collected. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaThe aim of this thesis was the assessment of the heavy metals release from the anthropogenic soils at the industrial area. The three different anthropogenic soils were studied: the Vistula River sediments from the flooded area in Cracow, sediments from the wetland of the Matylda Chanel and flotation waste from Zn-Pb processing in Bukowno. The concentration of Zn (561-16325 mg/kg), Cd (10,5-137 mg/kg) and Pb (112-17842 mg/kg) are very high in all examined anthropogenic soils. The sequential extraction methods showed that Zn and Cd are very mobile (up to 60% of Zn Chanel Matylda sediments, and up to 77% Cd from the flooded Vistula River sediments).
