    The procedure of BCR sequential extraction has been applied to samples of bottom sediments of the Vistula oxbow lakes in the area of Zator. Heavy metal concentration in each fraction showed a slight or no exceedances of threshold effect level (TEL). Only the cadmium content in the exchangeable fraction accounted for about 50% of the total concentration and exceeded the probable effect level (PEL). The most toxic samples occur in the Krajskie oxbow lake with a direct connection to the Vistula River. Despite the low toxicity of heavy metals in the investigated bottom sediments, accumulation of heavy metals and toxic effects are possible particularly in mussels. Mussels are benthic organism who has the ability to easily concentrate heavy metals and are often used as a bioindicator in metal pollution studies.
