The increasing degree of complexity and modern technical solutions, which have contributed to the growth of production processes, demand ever increasing higher level computers, automatic systems and power electronics. This means that the effects of direct and indirect disturbances in the electrical energy supply to technological devices are causing severe financial consequences. In an age of increasing fossil fuel prices and derived from this, the increasing cost of energy, the static capacitor banks are no longer an acceptable solution for reactive power compensation and power factor correction. The absolute minimum requirements are automatic capacitor banks, automatically changing the value of reactive power, tracing the changes of the condition of compensated receivers. Capacitor banks are the basis of the economical and efficient operation systems. Since currently, many systems have non-linear receivers, due to electromagnetic disturbances there are now new hazards surrounding capacitor banks both internally and externally. This paper reviews and presents the findings of voltage disturbances analysis that has an effect on the operation condition of automatic capacitor banks, installed at industrial plant sub- station, and the consequences on their exploitation and life-time.
