Adaptacja historycznych kanałów kanalizacyjnych na potrzeby podziemnych tras turystycznych (PTT)

Historic sewage channels are remarkable engineering structures of high architectural values. In consequence of their magnificence, they are compared to monumental basements, passages etc. Because of their uniqueness, the possibility of adaptation for touristic purposes is seriously considered. The article identifies threats, defines formal and technical requirements in terms of individual or partial adaptation. As far as the impact of impurities on health is considered it is of great importance to examine channels for the possibility of bacteriological threats.

Application of computer support for design of shaft furnaces - cupolas

Designing a machine's constructions and an object's structures is one of the areas of technology design. The complexity of the structure is defined by the technology for which it is used. Following the theory of construction and mechanisms, the full characteristics of a machine or device is defined by its shape and operating parameters. The shape reflects geometry. As a result of using the correct parameters, the construction should functional correctly (which means according to its general principles of operation). The project of any structure is a creative process performed by a team of designers and constructors. The contemporary design is not solely based on the personal preferences of engineers. More and more scientific and computerized design methods are being introduced to this process. They are characterized as computer-aided systems and are based on algorithms, programs, and IT equipment. This article presents the methodological application of computer-aided design on an example of the design of shaft furnaces that are used in foundries as cast iron smelters. These furnaces, called cupolas, have again become objects of interest for research. In the design of the cupola construction, Autodesk Inventor techniques were used.

Researches in safety of drilling operations are presently performed. Industrial practice focuses on efficiency increase and expectations of crews, operators, owners, share holders and state/society supervising safety assurance and safe for environment operations consent is required. Every new project shall take into consideration on any stages and in the smallest details safety assurance and effectiveness requirements. It is for remembering, that notion according to PN EN-ISO 9000:2000 means a relation between results reached and resources used.

Computational intelligence based design of biomaterials

This paper presents an overview of the applications of computational intelligence techniques, viz. artificial neural networks, fuzzy inference systems, and genetic algorithms, for the design of biomaterials with improved performance. These techniques are basically used for developing data-driven models and for optimization. The paper introduces the domain of biomaterials and how they can be designed using computational intelligence techniques. Then a brief description of the tools is made, followed by the applications of the tools in various domains of biomaterials. The applications range in all classes of materials ranging from alloys to composites. There are examples of applications for the surface treatment of biomaterials, materials for drug delivery systems, materials for scaffolds and even in implant design. It is found the tools can be effectively used for designing new and improved biomaterials.

Many Silesian cities and their districts still has strong traces of the industrial past, which often show their spatial and social degradation. This industrial inheritance and difficult process of restructuring has set a serious challenge for local governments. The answer for it is the search for new solutions and scenarios which should have introduced a new quality of life and functioning of the local community. One of the interesting projects in this area were design workshops »Design in the field«. Their uniqueness was based on the combined creative potential of designers and residents of selected cities to find a new solutions to meet local needs and problems.

Designing folding wall box pallets

Designing of modern box pallets with folding walls, which are used for example to transport tires, requires fulfilment of a number of performance requirements. Such pallets, adapted to be moved by forklifts, are stored or transported without loading with walls folded, and during operation they are put together in the piles of a few pieces and braced by the transport belts. Difficult operating conditions are related to necessity to provide resistance of construction of a pallet or their pile on: bending, piling, stability, hitting in case of a free-fall, lifting by forklift, as well as the resistance to horizontal strokes by both edges and legs. In order to meet the above mentioned requirements, it is necessary to implement the relevant tensile FEM analyses, which are then reviewed by the relevant experimental testing. The paper discuss the requirements specified by standards for designing of the above mentioned pallets and presents FEM results in the process of pallets' designing.

Directions for reducing the energy consumption of mining belt conveyors

The article discusses the issue of energy savings in the operation of mining belt conveyors. Using the concept of energy consumption indicators, the directions for reducing the energy consumption of belt conveyors are presented by applying energy-efficient components, upgrading the drive system, or introducing organizational and technical changes in the conveying process.

Problems connected with extreme loadings modelling in the process of design and exploitation of bucket wheel excavators intended for operation in the hard diggable soils, have been presented in the article. Existing deterministic model of bucket wheel loadings has been described. New statistical approach to digging forces modelling of hard diggable soils with bucket wheel excavators has been presented on the basis of actual research on parameters of this process. Extreme values of statistical asymptotic distributions of steel structure stress and unit digging resistances are the basis for modelling. The model of component tangent digging force operating directly on the edge bucket of bucket wheel excavators was proposed. The further procedure connected with verification of proposed statistical model was discussed. The advantages resulting from use of the above model in design and exploitation of opencast mining bucket wheel excavators were given.

To show history and encourage the discovery of it is not an easy task. This requires not only substantive correctness, but also an understanding of the audience, which can be characterized by different skills, sensitivities and personal experiences related to the fate of the community. Especially when the history is forgotten or for some reason is not clear from various interpretations, this task can require specific skills. The group of professionals who work on such studies today very often have to include designers. Their task is to find the form and the way to get to the users. The purpose of this paper is to show the possibilities of modern design in relation to the promotion of history. The good example will be the City of Bedzin and the history of the Jewish community which once lived there in large numbers.

Engineering structures - bridges, silos, gasometers, tunnels, interceptor sewers and the like - are distinguished by expressive beauty and individual forms. Revitalization of the engineering structures is a consecutive design challenge for the architects, constructers, miners etc. Transformation of the engineering structures for new functions is a complex process technically complicated and introducing at the same time a new quality to the existing, frequently degraded, urban planning areas. In the article maintenance and design problems related to the adaptation of the engineering structures have been presented. The shown examples of the revitalization engineering structures for the needs of the new utilitarian functions represent various technical solutions used in the process of adaptation.
