Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Disability, representation and translation: how can sociology move beyond the social model?(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2018) Rudnicki, SewerynThe aim of this article is to propose a new conceptual tool and an inspiration for sociological analysis of disability as an alternative to the predominant social model. It first discusses the social model and argues that in spite of its numerous merits it may be regarded as a manifestation of sociological reductionism of the actual complexity of disability. The notions of representation and translation are then contrasted, the former being the core of the social constructionist accounts and the latter being deeply rooted in a post‑constructivist perspective of actor‑network theory. Next, examples of translation, related to data visualization, disability simulation technologies and disability certification schemas are presented and discussed, emphasizing the action possibilities they enable by this impacting both the situation of people with disabilities and policy‑making processes. Finally, it is argued that sociology could engage in not only the examination but also the development of translational tools, which could be an important and welcome contribution of the discipline to disability policies.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Dostępność powstających i rewitalizowanych obiektów muzealnych dla osób niepełnosprawnych na przykładzie obszaru Zabłocia w Krakowie(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Żuchowska-Skiba, DorotaThe changing urban space occupies an important place in the eyes of people with disabilities in society today. Social definitions of disability carry responsibility for the marginalization of people with disabilities from the inadequacy of the individual arising from their physical deficits, to the level of macrosocial in changing attitudes, negative stereotypes and removing barriers in public space and social. The main aim of this article is therefore to show the relationship between the availability of specific urban space for the disabled, and made contemporary post-industrial revitalization areas. These investments are carried out in an era when human rights and equal access to space in the city are to be borne by the active environment are disabled and legitimation in the legal acts adopted by our country. Therefore, using the examples chosen deliberately wanted to show how the transformed spaces are available for disabled people. The analysis also took into account what are the functions of these areas today to see contemporary spaces of exclusion of people with disabilities in the postmodern city.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Dylematy etyczne i problemy metodologiczne warsztatu badacza na przykładzie badań prowadzonych w środowisku osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną oraz niepełnosprawnością fizyczną(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Niedbalski, JakubAim of the article is to consider ethical dilemmas and methodological problems, which a qualitative researcher becomes entangled in, taking up exploration of chosen spheres of social life. On one hand, these will be cases bases on research conducted in the environment of intellectually handicapped persons, and on the other I will refer to studies performed among the physically disabled. In the article I will try to provide liminal and ambiguous examples, which may become a trigger for further discussion. First of all they will be such situations, in which it is hard for a researcher to apply moral standards, without being afraid of violating them. Hence, the researcher is faced with a necessity to make difficult decisions and ambiguous choices, relating to that to what extent he can perform the research and realize the set goals, maintaining at the same time basic ethical standards.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Family networks of people with disabilities and their role in promoting the empowerment of people with disabilities(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2018) Stojkow, Maria; Żuchowska-Skiba, DorotaFamily members are the key source of social, emotional and financial assistance for people with disabilities throughout their lives. However, the role of the family undergoes significant changes in different periods of the life of people with disabilities. During childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age, people with disabilities need other forms of support, which means that they undertake educational, professional or family activities related to starting their own families and bringing up children. Around that time, their relationship with the family is changing. The role of the family is becoming limited in the area of control and assistance in making life choices for people with disabilities. Our goal will be to reconstruct the family’s presence in social networks of adults and to identify socio-demographic and emotional factors that affect the number of contacts with the family. This will be the starting point for presenting the impact of family relationships on strengthening empowerment and promoting self-determination among adults with disabilities. The analysis will be based on data from Social Diagnosis 2015.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Fat-free, high in calories. Management of diets in the case of a rare metabolic disorder(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2018) Chowaniec-Rylke, AnnaLCHADD is a rare metabolic disorder with a worldwide prevalence estimated at 1/250,000. However in Poland birth prevalence is predicted to be 1/120,000 and as high as 1/20,000 in the Pomeranian district. The bodies of LCHADD patients cannot produce the enzymes which are key in the process of fatty acid oxidation. That means that life-threatening episodes occur only when the body is »fasting« – the calorie intake is lower than the body's needs. There are no known cures or medications for LCHADD, but with proper treatment patients can improve and survive into adulthood. The treatment involves a strict diet, high in calories but fat-free. In this article I will sketch the dietary choices made by patients' parents. Those findings will be established based on anthropological fieldwork conducted for over a year among those families. My intention is to show how decisions made by caregivers regarding an ill child's diet can be interpreted in the broader context of consumer society, agency and a social model of disability.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Interfejs analizy ruchów wskaźnika w przeglądarce internetowej(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2007) Wołoszyn, PawełPraca przedstawia rezultat doświadczenia przeprowadzonego z przeglądarką intemetową wyposażoną w próbny interfejs analizy ruchów wskaźnika. One of the issues noted in this document is the importance of learning to keep active seniors. Statistics show that between 32 and 52 percent of this population are people with reduced ability. For them, the use of UTW depends on taking into account their special needs arising from disability. The article shows requirements of the Act on ensuring accessibility for people with special needs and accessibility standards for cohesion policy 2014-2020. The author analyzes the content of UTW websites, seeking answers to the question: are they targeted at people with disabilities? The analysis shows that disabled seniors are still a marginalized group. The exact answer to the question about the access of people with disabilities to UTW could only give a study conducted on a larger scale.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Social support networks – the importance of social networks for disabled people in dealing with difficult situations(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2018) Żuchowska-Skiba, DorotaThe main purpose of the article is to show social support of people with disabilities from a structural perspective. This perspective shows the relationship between the structure of social networks of people with disabilities and the actions they take in difficult situations. The very level of embedding of individuals in social networks is an important factor enabling them to benefit from social support and resources that are available in social networks. Without social relationships with people who form social environments of an individual, people with disabilities cannot rely on help in overcoming difficulties. Support is not possible without the presence of others who are willing to provide it. The analysis will be based on data collected in Social Diagnosis in 2015, which will allow reconstructing the size of social networks of people with disabilities in terms of their number of interactions with family, friends and acquaintances.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Wstęp. Aktywność, podmiotowość, tożsamość – osoby z niepełnosprawnościami w społecznych przestrzeniach życia codziennego(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Niedbalski, Jakub; Racław, MariolaThis introduction is intended to outline the topics of a special issue on the notions of activity, subjectivity and identity of people with disabilities. The matters concerning disability, both in the scientific discourse and social perception, are constantly under discussion and broad analysis, thus the different perspectives and ways of addressing them. While crucial but also somewhat opposite to each other are the medical and social models of disability. There is a biopsychological model in between them, which assigns an individual with an active subject role having some characteristics of biological and psychological nature, as well as those related to the social functioning of that individual. A key to this approach is an action called empowerment, meaning the process of regaining an individual’s self-confidence and self-awareness. Identity grows here on awareness of one’s own physicality and mental potential, and it is related to the notion of subjectivity, which is expressed by freedom and functioning autonomy of persons with disabilities in various life spheres. This includes the possibilities to play different social roles related to cultural patterns and their implementation, e.g. a student, a worker, a parent, a spouse, etc. Therefore, the issue incorporates theoretical and empirical texts on the matters of subjectivity and identity of persons with disability, referring to, among other things, such activities as education, work, or participation in the broadly understood culture.
