»Choroby śmierć uprzedzają« (»Diseases precede death«), or on the understanding of disease in Polish and Italian proverbs (16th–20th century)

The purpose of the paper is to analyse the folk understanding of physical and mental illness in Polish and Italian proverbs. The analysis shows that this is not a uniform picture, and that acceptance of disease and its treatment have had several dimensions in the world of premonitions, superstitions and religion, and the physician treating a disease is just one and not the most important component in the process of recovery. The image of the disease in Italian proverbs seems to be similar to Polish proverbs, though not identical. It is extremely interesting that a part of the folk world connected with diseases and the fight against them has survived in modern Polish and standard Italian languages.

Metaphorization of categories of disease from a perspective of cognitive linguistics

The primary way of presenting phenomena which are elusive for the senses, the mechanisms of which exceed our direct cognitive abilities (e.g. viruses, bacteria, infection, treatment) and those that require abstract thinking is through a process of metaphorization. Before the bacteriological breakthrough, diseases could be conceptualized by means of metaphors of the imbalance of the internal system, of punishment, flaw, and sin, of mechanical defects, or by means of personalisation or reification. After Louis Pasteur, the war metaphor was developed and, with technological development, also the mechanistic metaphor, and then the bioinformatics metaphor. On the other hand, today we can see that, as we with become more aware of this process, there is also a need for a new way of their metaphorization to respond to new diseases, especially chronic and incurable ones. In this paper I will try to indicate and briefly discuss various metaphors of disease, however, the bulk of the attention will be dedicated to metaphors linking disease with war, as they are most popular in the contemporary culture.

Мета дипломного проекту – дослідження залежності здоров’я населення Івано-Франківської області від забруднення довкілля. Метод дослідження – статистичний, картографічний, комп’ютерний та аналітичний. У дипломному проекті розглянуто демографічні проблеми, досліджено медико-екологічний стан території області. Визначені домінантні чинники, що впливають на стан здоров’я населення з урахуванням впливу навколишнього природного середовища. Створені тематичні карти оцінки забруднення атмосферного повітря території . На основі зібраних даних розроблено комплекс заходів, спрямованих на попередження, виявлення і зменшення негативного впливу середовища існування на якість життя і здоров’я населення.
