Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , A terrible structuralist wisdom: how language affects the identity of an emigrant. Case study based on the autobiography »Lost in translation« by Eva Hoffman(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2013) Szepe, AgataThis essay is a case study about linguistic mechanisms that affect an emigrant's life. The research is based on the autobiography Lost in Translation by the Polish emigrant Eva Hoffman, analyzed with the use of theories of the structural linguistic school. According to the research, some linguistic rules influence her life very deeply. She communicates poorly because the expression of new language corresponds with different content from the native language, creating another form. Eva starts to treat daily communication like a written text, in the meaning used by Roland Barthes, which results in alienation. However, some linguistic principles such as the arbitrary nature of a sign or inseparability of signifiant and signifie do not affect her at all. She deepens her understanding of both her mother tongue and the new one by linguistic terms such as translation describing, defining and finding synonyms and tries to find her own identities using expressions such as I, you, here, near, and far, belonging to linguistic universals. Her identity is an identity-in-progress because she replaces her old home with a new center of the world. The old home remains a heterotopia while an emigrant changes her onceptions connected with the words here, there, near, and far.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Consumer tricks and strategies among Polish migrants in Belfast, Northern Ireland(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Kempny, MartaThis paper examines practices and strategies of consumption among Polish migrants in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Bridging theoretical perspectives on postmodernism, transnationalism and consumer society, the author discusses extent to which consumerism among Polish migrants can be seen as their way of integration with the local community in Northern Ireland. Focusing on conspicuous and inconspicuous consumption, this article explores the reasons why migrants take on the local consumption practices. Furthermore it examines migrants' attempts to increase their social status, and display wealth through their engagement in consumer culture. Next, differences in Polish and local consumption patterns are teased out. Following this, the author links consumerism among Polish migrants to their embeddedness in local, transnational and global spheres. This research adopts 30 in-depth interviews.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , »I want to be nothing« - challenging notions of culture, race and identity(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2011) Lubowicka, AgataThis article tackles the issue of »hyphenated identities« in Heidi W. Durrow’s novel The girl who fell from the sky (2010), whose main topic is growing up as a girl of mixed race in a dominant black culture. This article examines how Rachel Morse, the main character in the novel, challenges racism and the essentialist notion of identity. Firstly, Stuart Hall and Paul Gilroy’s approaches to that issue are introduced and discussed. Then in relation to their theories an interpretation of Durrow’s fictional character is delivered. As the third part of the article, elements of Danish culture appearing in Durrow’s are presented and analyzed as well as the novel’s explicit intertextual references to Nella Larsen’s authorship, another mulatto woman writer of half-Danish origin. In accordance with Gilory’s theory, the article’s aim is to show that Rachel’s identity is born in the process of self-reflection where Danishness becomes her »crossroads« and thus to confirm that such phenomena as culture, ethnicity and identity are constantly constructed and altered.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Identity and the sense of subjectivity in parents of children with intellectual disability in the context of family life destabilization(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Niedbalski, JakubThe lives of families who take care of people with disabilities are full of unexpected events, unwanted situations, and difficulties that accumulate at every step. W jakim stopniu urodzeni za granicą badacze i wykładowcy czują się związani z Polską?(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Łuczaj, KamilThe paper discusses the issue of the national identity of foreign-born academic employees working in Poland. Based on 100 in-depth interviews, it answers the question »to what extent foreign-born researchers feel Polish and declare to be a part of the Polish academic community«, and analyses why do they feel like insiders. While the interviewees relatively rarely felt Polish, they quite often declared belonging to the Polish academic community. The way they presented their place within these two communities raises the question of the appropriateness of the general category of »insiders«, because foreign-born academics turned out to be a very diverse community. Some of them treated Poland instrumentally – as a stage of their academic careers, but some became Polish patriots. Paradoxically, the latter opted for local science without supporting internationalization.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Opowieści nieobecnych. O roli designu w tworzeniu materiałów edukacyjnych na przykładzie losów będzińskich Żydów(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2014) Rojek-Adamek, PaulinaTo show history and encourage the discovery of it is not an easy task. This requires not only substantive correctness, but also an understanding of the audience, which can be characterized by different skills, sensitivities and personal experiences related to the fate of the community. Especially when the history is forgotten or for some reason is not clear from various interpretations, this task can require specific skills. The group of professionals who work on such studies today very often have to include designers. Their task is to find the form and the way to get to the users. The purpose of this paper is to show the possibilities of modern design in relation to the promotion of history. The good example will be the City of Bedzin and the history of the Jewish community which once lived there in large numbers.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Przyszłość Łemków w Polsce – szanse i zagrożenia w subiektywnej wizji przedstawicieli społeczności łemkowskiej(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2011) Królewski, JarosławThe main subject of the article is a subjective vision of the Lemkos minority representatives on the future of this community, plotted from the perspective of contemporary times, based on personal experiences, thoughts and fears of Lemkos. Inspired by transnational theories in migration and diaspora studies, the author proposes a categorization of Kurdish migration waves and waves of internal migration in Turkey. Drawing on in-depth interviews conducted with Kurds in Istanbul, the paper depicts ways of maintaining ties with the country’s Kurdish regions and types of social organizing around their culture and perceived needs. The paper also offers insights into contemporary Kurdish migration in Turkey, leading to the conclusion that although trans-locality has often been forced on Kurds, the socio-political situation in 2002–2015 led to the emergence of a new, trans-local, socially active Kurdish elite in Turkey.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Tropami pamięci - wstępne uwagi na temat tożsamości w biografiach krymskich Tatarów(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2011) Borowik, IrenaThe article is devoted to the preliminary analysis of biographical interviews, taken with representatives of Crimean Tatars returning to Crimean Peninsula and settling in the places that they or their ancestors used to live before deportation. The research was conducted in summer of 2008 and 2009, 20 interviews were taken with consideration of age, sex, place of living and level of education. Traces of memory are understood in this article as repeatable elements of biographical narratives. By this virtue those repeated elements refer not only to individual identity but they also build collective identity, more precisely national in this case. The key element of the article is the third part of it where relations between memory and identity are explored in collected biographies. As it appeared in all life-stories deportation from Crimea and return after years are crucial elements of construction of biographies and in all cases it has a form of trajectories. The general conclusion is that memory of these painful events and celebration of it is functional for building the strong collective identity which is based on traditional values, religious and political integration of national minority.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Twoje ja oddzwoni za chwilę. Wpływ nowych technologii na tożsamość i zakres autonomii działań(2009) Albin, KrzysztofThe article is focused on the problems of the interaction between Self,Self-concepts and Self-believes with the IT objects. In reference to the views of Self by William James, Russell Belk, Hazel Markus and Alvin Toffler the research described below give the picture of change in Self structure among the Polish internet users. The intensive impact between the Self-concepts and IT technology is still getting stronger. The most important results:1. Over 1/5 subjects, users of the mobile phone and Internet, treat the mobile phone as the part of their Self-indentity. 2. 11% subjects treat the mobile phone as the part of their Self and without of this part the existence is impossible at all. 3. 18% subjects, treat the memory and data of the mobile phone the same as the personal memory. The contacts with IT objects, especially the mobile phone, lead to the change of autonomy of Self-perception and planning of everyday activity. The research described In the article are the second stage of research and lead to the next ones dedicated to more close examination of described below effects. The influence of IT technology to the Self structure is still getting stronger. The specific direction of the influence is difficult to close prediction in this moment, but in opinion of author-must be monitored and described. Because of geometrie inerease of the intensity of the contact between the human being and the IT objects the forms the activity easy-to-do until today could be impossible to manage without of the IT support. For example in first stage of the research, made with IDI methodology, the subjects declare the lack of the chance of meeting with friends in the downtown without support of the mobile phone. From the other hand the strong positive impact between the IT technology and cognhwe abilities are undeniable in behavior in abstract level activity. In the opinion of author the name »mobile phone« is not actual in Polish culture anymore. This IT object should be treated as the »input« to the virtual data system.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , »(Un)necessary changes.« Self-image transformations and reorganization of everyday life of women with acquired disabilities as a consequence of cancer(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Piątek, KatarzynaThe aim of the article is to present, based on the author's research, identity problems and conflicts of social roles experienced by women with acquired disability, which is a consequence of cancer. The research shows that numerous tensions and dilemmas occur in relation to a conflict between being a disabled woman and this woman's family, professional and social roles. Disability is connected with inability to perform all former roles and the need to reorganize everyday life, thus affecting the image of oneself. Therefore, the situation of becoming disabled is a critical moment, which forces the redefinition of »Ego«, the change of former lifestyle and of performed roles as well as relations with other people. In order to cope with these challenges and adapt to change, women take various action strategies.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , W poszukiwaniu siebie. Indywidualne motywy podwieszania ciała praktykowanego współcześnie w Polsce(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Kowal, KatarzynaThe paper deals with the practice of body suspension, which is one of the forms of body play, initiated and popularized by the Modern Primitive movement. The empirical basis of the paper is the author’s own sociological research focused on the issue of individual motives to practise body suspension. The research sample consisted of people who have experienced body suspension several times ($N = 30$). Since grounded theory methodology was selected as the research strategy, the technique of free-form guided interview was used. The theoretical framework for empirical analyses was demarcated by joint, socio-cultural and at the same individual perspective on body perception, with the latter being the most important because of the chosen research strategy. The following motives for participation of the research subjects in body suspension practice emerged from the collected empirical material: to get to know their own bodies, to overcome the limitations of the body, to exercise the right of ownership of the body, to work with the body, to experience a different state of consciousness, to reach spiritual and corporeal ecstasy, to promote neo-primitivist trend of body suspension. In thus described motives for body suspension, the body appears to be a source of knowledge and experience, place of control, object of ownership, source of pleasure, and above all – the centre of identity.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Wstęp. Aktywność, podmiotowość, tożsamość – osoby z niepełnosprawnościami w społecznych przestrzeniach życia codziennego(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Niedbalski, Jakub; Racław, MariolaThis introduction is intended to outline the topics of a special issue on the notions of activity, subjectivity and identity of people with disabilities. The matters concerning disability, both in the scientific discourse and social perception, are constantly under discussion and broad analysis, thus the different perspectives and ways of addressing them. While crucial but also somewhat opposite to each other are the medical and social models of disability. There is a biopsychological model in between them, which assigns an individual with an active subject role having some characteristics of biological and psychological nature, as well as those related to the social functioning of that individual. A key to this approach is an action called empowerment, meaning the process of regaining an individual’s self-confidence and self-awareness. Identity grows here on awareness of one’s own physicality and mental potential, and it is related to the notion of subjectivity, which is expressed by freedom and functioning autonomy of persons with disabilities in various life spheres. This includes the possibilities to play different social roles related to cultural patterns and their implementation, e.g. a student, a worker, a parent, a spouse, etc. Therefore, the issue incorporates theoretical and empirical texts on the matters of subjectivity and identity of persons with disability, referring to, among other things, such activities as education, work, or participation in the broadly understood culture.Item type:Thesis, Access status: Restricted , Zastosowanie technik wymiany danych chronionych Identity Management do zarządzania sieciami wirtualnymi(Data obrony: 2013-07-03) Sołtys, Tomasz
