Information – modern theories

This review deviates from the usual approach to the topic of information by not focusing on Shannon’s Theory of Communication (TOC) and the related or derived concepts. In addition, we do not talk at length about information in relation to knowledge, data, communication, information processing, or similar concepts. Instead, we endeavor to reappraise our understanding of information without favoring any specific perspective. We know a lot about information, and the various conceptualizations of information presented in this paper are proof of this. Nevertheless, we also show that some lingering unresolved questions remain about the nature of information. To somewhat stem the appearance of further new concepts of information, we consider two perspectives, namely ontological and epistemic, and posit that we can potentially reduce all information variants to just these concepts. We then look at two general theories of information: the General Definition of Information (GDI) and the General Theory of Information (GTI), arguing that the GTI appears to be the better of these two options because it is more fundamental and comprehensive with deep metaphysical roots. Finally, we review some recent studies about information’s physical nature, such as for information and mass, meaningful physical information, and the persistence of information. This review, like all reviews, is selective and synthetic, but the extensive reference list provides the necessary resources to explore the discussed ideas in greater detail, as well as study the recent works on the nature of information.

Sustainable development of information society: towards an ethics of information

In the information and knowledge society that we are building, we deal with a tremendous increase in the quantity and diversity of information. That condition also results from new information technologies which supply new, almost unlimited possibilities of creation, processing, storage, retrieval, and perception of information. The social flood of information constitutes a substrate of the information market where information becomes a commodity. That situation in the information society is a source of many problems related to the necessity of proper selection of information, information management and ethical responsibility on the part of information-process participants. This paper is a continuation of our considerations of the present day issues of the development of an information society, stressing the necessity of dealing with information ethics which concerns all human activities related to information, including cooperation in the transfer of technologies and innovations. We present here the object of that discipline, its tasks and the need to shape the ethical culture of all persons dealing with information.

Nowoczesne podejście naukowe umożliwia zrozumienie prawidłowości przyrodniczych oraz systemowych mechanizmów zmian klimatu. Opiera się ono na przesłankach teorii systemów, kompleksowym rozwiązywaniu problemów, interdyscyplinarnym badaniu problemów i ich systemowej interpretacji. Pierwsza z trzech części tej pracy dotyczy genezy zastosowań w tej dziedzinie analizy systemowej oraz wyników i ewoluowania modelu. Meritum tej części jest krótka historia Ziemi jako części podsystemu wszechświata z uwzględnieniem współzależności i interakcji, rozpatrywana w kontekście zmian klimatu w skali całej biosfery.

Współczesne podejście naukowe z zastosowaniem teorii systemowej, rozwiązań kompleksowych problemów, studiów przypadku i myślenia systemowego otwiera nowe horyzonty przed naukami przyrodniczymi. Nowością jest dostrzeżenie holistycznej natury wszechświata. W tej części pracy zastosowano podejście systemowe do ewoluowania Ziemi, biosfery oraz systemów przyrodniczych. Za najważniejsze cechy uznano współzależnooeć i interakcje pomiędzy zmianami klimatu a biosferą. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na znaczenie myślenia systemowego dla rozumienia przyrody.
