The presented doctoral dissertation is devoted to the examination of the influence of the phenomenon of the crystallization by halite, carbonate and sulfate minerals of historic timber lining in Wieliczka Salt Mine as for resistance parameters. Extracted wood samples come from mine timber lining estimated to be between 50 - 500 years old located in the oldest part of the mine on level I. Samples were identified as follows: fir, pine and spruce of varied humidity and salinity with a focus on resistance check in order to define compression strength and bending strength. Conducted researches are of fundamental significance for the team of engineers who design and replace timber lining in historic salt mines, where one takes advantages of natural and unimpregnated wood coniferous and disidous. The wood used for timber lining should be resistant and ensure safe support of the applied timber lining. This dissertation is of an innovative and interdisciplinary character because despite the richness of publication on the issue of Wieliczka Salt Mine there has not been any researches on wood strength of the historic timber lining. The interdisciplinary character of the dissertation lies in skillful combining of the knowledge from different fields starting from geomechanics, mining, underground building engineering, geology and mineralogy through botanies and timber expertise as well as elements of history of archeology.
