    Key figures regarding underground gas storages (UGS) in Poland were provided in the article. The author enumerated main groups of costs characteristic for each of the basic types of UGS, underlining the necessity of including the cushion gas cost in the overall investment cost. In all Polish UGS, except Mogilno cavern UGS, the cushion gas volume exceeds the working volume of the storage. A complex economic analysis of an UGS investment requires considering not only financial costs but also opportunity costs (e.g. huge amount of exploitable gas left in the field in Polish Wierzchowice depleted field storage). The author suggested conducting a detailed comparative analysis of different types of UGS, which would enable rational decision-making regarding the choice of type and localization of an UGS, and consider the opportunity costs.
