In present times much attention is put to the problem of saving electrical energy. It brings the demand to make high-efficiency electrical devices. In this matter, permanent-magnet motors seem to be attractive, especially because of fast development in magnetic materials. Single phase line-start permanent magnet motor becomes the alternative for an induction machine, for instance in devices for home usage like compressors in refrigerators. It is characterized by lower losses in steady synchronous state, because of lack of losses in squirrel-cage caused by slip. The paper's purpose is to provide the performance analysis of this type of machine. Among others, there will be shown methods to optimise geometry and electrical circuit, that can be found in literature. There will also be presented a comparision of the starting methods and aspects that should be considered while designing this types of motors.
