Wydział Inżynierii Metali i Informatyki PrzemysłowejNowadays about 60% of world production and consumption of plastic waste are polyolefines and their production is still rising. They are used as packaging, in building engineering, automotive industry or electronic engineering. High calorific value and proper chemical composition of polyolefines (based on carbon and hydrogen) make them ideal for use in wide range of applications. They are used as a substitute for coke or heavy oil, reducing agent of iron ore in steel making processes. The polyolefines can be used as valuable fuel mixed with coal in power plants. This paper outlines thermal decomposition of PE-LD, PEHD, PP which are used in agriculture (greenhouses, agricultural bags) and packaging from household. Influence of ageing on thermal properties, heat effects of chemical processes and gases from thermal decomposition of polymer materials were studied. Thermogravimetry (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Mass Spectrometry coupled with Thermogravimetry (TG-MS) and Infra-Red Absorption Spectroscopy were used as analytical methods. Despite of thermal analysis of polyolefines, laboratory tests were also conducted using custom made pre-combustion chamber, so combustion path was longer. Temperature of combustion process was between 850-1200°C and excess air number λ=1,33÷1,73.
