    In thesis present petrographic and facial characteristics of seam no. 401 from ‘Brzeszcze’ coal mine in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Using scientific methods determined lithotypes of the bituminous coal and its maceral composition. Paleoenvironment of deposition of the organic matter was specified by using Diessel’s and Calder’s facial indexes. Based on the measured random vitrinite reflectance coal rank of the bituminous coal and coaly shale organic matter were determined. These data were used for coal classification according to the current standards.
