Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaNatural oil leaks in the Carpathians have aroused interest of people inhabiting the Carpathian Foothills since time immemorial. Successive studies of the geological setting and productivity of Carpathian anticlinal folds resulted in the discovery of numerous oil fields. When applying only the so-called primary exploitation methods, involving natural field energy, primary geological reserves may be exploited at low recovery factors of ca. 10-35%. Therefore, in order to increase oil recovery, secondary exploitation methods are used. The Carpathians are an excellent example of applying the above-mentioned methods with very good results for many years, since the 1930s. One positive example of a field in which primary methods were accompanied by secondary ones, i.e. water and gas injections, is the Osobnica oil field. Up to the present day, recovery factors obtained at the site with the introduced methods attained a level of 33% of geological reserves.
