Czy ciało może być świątynią duszy? Parareligijny wymiar duchowości hatha-jogi

The purpose of this article is a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of hatha-yoga, as it occurs in the western world. The issue of hatha-yoga in contemporary societies can also be viewed from the perspective of the concept of modernization. However, an interesting perspective may be also the category of »subjectivisation of religion«. An individual currently chooses from a wide range of spiritual practices specific items and constructs her/his own fusion-type religion. The individual in the modem world, therefore, continue to search for transcendence and understanding of ultimate meanings. Subjectivisation process leads to a private spiritual exploration well targeting the body of the individual, which can be an expression of the value of health, well-being and emotional or hedonistic experience, seeking for risky and extreme situations (such as extreme sports and mountain climbing). An example of this type of spiritual quest in the modern western world is also hatha-yoga, which is a practice originated from India, and which is connected with a work on the body where doing certain exercises affects our psycho-physical well-being, and sometimes spiritual condition. Theoretical theses contained in the paper are mainly the consequence of five years of ethnographic research in the social world of hatha-yoga.

Kryzys instytucji religijnych i jego wpływ na religijność. Przypadek Polski

It would be valuable on the basis of sociology religion to concentrate on the crisis of religious institutions and its impact on religiosity in the contemporary sociological discussions. According to theories of secularization, the crisis is a symptom of a broader process of secularization and it is related to the structural changes. In turn, the economic theories assume the crisis as a consequence of some non-effectiveness of religious institutions to the needs of the believers. Both approaches seem to provide interesting solutions to the problem. Here, I took a midway position I found that the structural changes decrease the ability of religious institutions to organize religious life of its members and, in result, the members are less and less satisfied with them. In addition, this process has its own impact on their religiosity. The main consequence of the crisis is the decline in church attendance. In order to verify the assumptions I used the data on Polish Catholics from two surveys carried out in 1999 and 2008 as the part of the European Values Servey. The outcomes of the statistical analysis seem to confirm the above assumptions.

The topic of this article is the future of religion lessons in Polish schools. A supporting argument for the analysis of this issue this school year (2020/2021) is the 30$^{th}$ anniversary of the return to schools of and the fact that a religious class is the most controversial school subject. During this period, its presence almost constantly sparked off discussions. The article refers to the outcomes of online research conducted in 2020 among students from Polish universities (research sample – 621 respondents). Within the outcome of the research, together with the already known results of the studies (revealing the shortcomings of such classes) one can provide a statement that in the coming years, the general interest in participating in religion lessons, will decline and will evolve towards elite classes, in which only pupils and students from deeply religious families will be primarily involved.
