It was performed with the city of Krakow as the case study. The paper describes the outline of the spatial planning system in Poland and the planning conditions of Krakow. The data obtained from laser scanning for Krakow are also briefly characterized. The possibility of using these data for locating high-rise buildings in terms of the protection of Krakow's panorama and within two programs »IT system of the Country's Protection Against Extreme Hazards« (ISOK) and »Integrated spatial data monitoring system for air quality improvement in Krakow« (MONIT-AIR) were analyzed in the paper. The main result of the research is the assessment of what studies or measurements may be used to meet particular spatial planning needs or requirements.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , From Farmland to Cityscape: Urban Growth Simulation in Surkhet Valley, Nepal Using Remote Sensing and CA-Markov Modeling(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2026) Budha, Padam Bahadur; Bhardwaj, Ashutosh; Thapa, Rajesh BahadurUrbanization is rapidly transforming the spatial and socioeconomic landscape of many emerging cities in Nepal, yet relatively little research has explored these dynamics outside the Kathmandu Valley. This study applies a cellular automata-Markov (CA-Markov) model to simulate and predict land use and land cover (LULC) changes in Surkhet Valley, the core of Birendranagar Municipality, one of Nepal’s fastest-growing urban centers. Using Landsat imagery from 1999, 2009, and 2019, alongside spatial and socioeconomic factors, the model captures historical LULC transitions and projects future changes for the years 2029, 2039, and 2049. Model validation was conducted against the 2019 classified LULC map, yielding an overall agreement of 80.65% and a standard kappa statistic of 70.31%, confirming the model’s predictive reliability. Results indicate a clear trajectory of urban expansion at the expense of agricultural land. Built-up surfaces is projected to more than double – from 12.43 km² in 2019 to 31.38 km² in 2049, while cultivated land is expected to decline by over 20 km² in the same period. Spatial analysis shows urban growth intensifying around existing centers, highways, and transitional ecotones between forest and cultivation zones. Compared to similar studies in Kathmandu and Biratnagar, Surkhet exhibits a higher normalized rate of urban expansion, highlighting its emerging role in regional development. This research underscores the value of remote sensing and spatial modeling in urban planning and land management. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaGłównym tematem pracy jest ocena wpływu zmian zagospodarowania przestrzennego w rejonie lokalizacji historycznych cmentarzy w Krakowie na środowisko. Obszar działalności antropogenicznej średniowiecznego miasta Krakowa, możemy dostrzec w dzisiejszych nawarstwieniach historycznych. Obszar istniejących dzisiaj Plant krakowskich zmieniał się na przestrzeni wieków. Na początku wykorzystywany był jako miejsce posadowienia murów obronnych wraz z otaczającą je fosą, potem w wyniku późniejszych prac zmieniał się i przyjął obecnie nam znany wygląd – pas zieleni okalający Stare Miasto. Zmiany te wpływają negatywnie na parametry podłoża co może stanowić zagrożenie zarówno dla zdrowia i życia ludzi, dla środowiska, a także dla współcześnie istniejących budynków i zabytków architektonicznych. W pracy zostały przedstawione informacje na temat geologii i hydrogeologii obszaru, historia obszaru – miejsc nieistniejących cmentarzy Krakowa. As part of the project, selected urban quarters were subject to a detailed 3D scan, and digital models of buildings and their surroundings were created. The development of so-called “technology baskets,” which are sets of renewable energy technologies that provide: heating, cooling, and electricity for different types of buildings, also played a key role. The article describes the methods used to select urban areas, the subsequent stages of the project, and the City Energy System Simulator (SSEM) tool, which could be used as an aid in designing a energy transformation for other cities in Poland.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Spatial absorbency assessment for sustainable land development(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Broża, Noemi; Birnbaum, Karolina; García Castro, David; Kazak, JanSustainable land use development requires a smart decision‑making process based on appropriate spatial design patterns. However, the pro‑investment policy of many municipalities often results in disproportions between the demand and supply of investment areas, which means that spatial development is not realized in a sustainable way. In order to avoid the overconsumption of land for investment purposes, central government in Poland introduced a requirement to assess land balance, which includes the calculation of spatial absorbency at the level of local urban planning. The aim of this work is to develop the concept of spatial absorbency assessment. In order to select best practices, document reviews of local spatial policies in Kalisz, Łódź, Toruń and Gdańsk were performed. Based on the review, a method for spatial absorbency assessment was presented. The applicability of the proposed solution is presented by its use on the case of the Racibórz municipality. The visualization shows what kind of geoinformation is required to perform an assessment by means of the developed method. The results of the calculations present the final feedback that is received by local authorities. The work was carried out using ArcGIS software. Environmental conditions of the city determine direction of the development of urban planning. The first part include mineral resources, energy industry and environmental pollution informations. Second part presents strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the city with respect to SWOT analysis. The last part consider the topic in more details and shows conclusion about direction of the urban planning connected to environmental conditions. Urban planning should be concentrated on energy industry and completed by geotourism.
