In metal mines, after blasting the rocks, the blasted ore is transferred to specific industrial plants for processing operations. During such operations, a large amount of pollutant tailings are inevitably generated. Those tailings must be safely stored in previously constructed storage dams. In this research, a storage dam has been designed to store the tailings of the Iranian Sangan Iron Mine project. The geometry and capacity of the dam were designed to minimize the construction works and to maintain the stability of the facility. To assess the stability of the proposed storage dam, a numerical analysis was performed for both static and dynamic loading conditions. The results showed that the embankment is stable under these two different loading conditions. Hence, the proposed design can be successfully adopted for the construction of a tailings storage dam in the project. In addition, the methodology presented in this research can be used by geotechnic engineers to design safe tailings storage dams in mining projects.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Analiza warunków stateczności wału oporowego składowiska odpadów komunalnych oraz propozycje jego stabilizacji(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2005) Flisiak, Jerzy; Olesiak, SebastianAt the beginning of 2004, after intensive rainfalls, soil masses of the retaining embankment of municipal wastes disposal »Zoniówka II« in Zakopane has slide down. Landslide blocked concrete road, which was the only link with sewage treatment plant. Entire loss of retaining embankment's stability could have conducted to geotechnical and ecological catastrophe. As a result it would be necessary to close the disposal and deprive the city Zakopane a possibility of wastes disposal. On the request of municipal wastes disposal users the expertise was made, targeted on finding a reason of landslide and offer a way to secure the retaining embankment of the disposal. The task included field geotechnical studies, analysis of the embankment's stability separately and analysis of stability assuming disposal completely filled with wastes and reclaimed according to executive project. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaDisposal of waste is now one of the most important contemporary environmental issues and the increasing amount of waste tends to seek new methods of disposal, in addition to burning and costly recycling. Particularly troublesome are the environmental waste polymers, including polyethylene material resistant to degradation. The present study sought to lead to degradation of the chemical structure of polyethylene with the participation of microorganisms. The biological material was isolated from the soil, and the substance has been degraded high density polyethylene (HDPE) in the form of foil. Disinfected samples were subjected to the action of microorganisms suspended in a liquid medium Davis Minimal Broth for 44 days. The medium was a modified chemical composition, so that the main carbon source for the microorganisms was polyethylene. During the breeding experiments the development of microorganisms population was controlled by making measurements of the optical density OD650. The microorganisms were identified as Achromobacter xylosoxidans and the film samples FTIR research showed degradation structure of HDPE.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Likwidacja składowiska odpadów niebezpiecznych na przykładzie SMD Kölliken (Szwajcaria)(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2005) Barchański, BronisławOn the area of the liquidated clay outcrop in Kolliken (Switzerland) 375 000 MG of hazardous wastes have been deposited in the years 1978-85. As a result of protests of the population in 1985 the disposal has been officially closed. Ordered research proved that potable ground waters in the vicinity of the disposal site have been contaminated by leakages deriving (washed away) from the disposal site. In order to avoid further contamination of potable ground waters a decision was made about making a barrier around the disposal site in the form of 129 drainage holes (wells) connected to a collective dewatering gallery of total length of 600 meters. Tapped contaminated leakages have been treated on the spot in a specially built treatment plant. It in analysis of influence of wastes on quality of underground waters was used in the programmes to modelling the flow of waters and the pollution migration, after affirming that the rock conditions permint of infiltration model admission. One of the ideas it possible to combine economic development with the protection of valuable natural areas is the concept of sustainable development. In this paper the issue of sustainability within the municipality of the Wielka Wieś having natural and cultural values. Currently, local government policy led to a large extent takes into account environmental aspects. The problem is, however, little environmental awareness of inhabitants of commune, and therefore proposed to undertake a range of activities, whose task will be to show the public their important role in environmental policy. The proposed solutions in this study are consistent with the principles of sustainable development, their adoption does not guarantee success, however, give the opportunity to reach small, necessary on the path of sustainability goals.Item type:Article, Access status: Open Access , Wykorzystanie inżynierii lądowej w trakcie likwidacji składowiska niebezpiecznych odpadów »Fischer Deponie« - Austria(2006) Barchański, BronisławWaste disposal in after exploitation workings has at times been realized with violation of legal regulations in the field of water protection.
