The White Volcanoes of Harrat Khaybar, north of Al-Madinah
(2014) Kaminski, Michael Anthony; Al-Shaibani, Abdulaziz; Al-Ramadan, Khalid
The volcanic field of Harrat Khaybar north of Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia contains rare examples of white volcanoes comprised mainly of the felsic rock comendite. The obsidian that occurs in association with the white comendite was exploited and worked by Neolithic inhabitants of the area. The white volcanoes are surrounded by more recent black basaltic lava fields that follow the pre-existing topography and display both aa and pahoehoe flow structures. Although situated only 60 km from a busy motorway, the volcanic area is remote and all necessary safety precautions must be taken in order to visit the volcanoes.

The Zalew Balaton Quarry geosite in Trzebinia, southern Poland an update of geological data
(2014) Kamieniarz, Sylwester
A development project of the Zalew Balaton area is being presently carried out. One of the project assumptions is to create a geological path across the object. However, detailed data about the geological structure of this place is not available. For this reason, the author has researched and updated the information about the rocks occurring in the walls of the old quarry. Primarily, terrain (textural and structural analysis, layers strike and dip measurements, geological boundaries delimitation) and laboratory analysis (X-Ray Powder Diffraction, microscopic rock samples analysis) were conducted. Collected data was afterwards compared with available literature. Within the steep slopes of excavation, strong-karsted, faulted Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) carbonate sediments were revealed. These are massive, platy and crumpled limestone. These rocks could be deposited in changing conditions of sedimentation, when calm carbonate sedimentation was disturbed by underwater gravity flows, as demonstrated by their detrital character. One of the karst funnel on the northern slope was filled with Oligocene sand. As a result, groundwater fluctuations created a sarsen structure, popularly called the “Wielbłąd”. In relation to the planned geological path across the Zalew Balaton area, previous knowledge should be supplemented with new data, respectively processed and included on information panes, located within object. Plans of the path should pay attention to potential geotouristic safety, as well as to the geological values of the protected object, during its future modernization.

Geological and tourist attractions of southern Bornholm
(2014) Jamorska, Izabela; Gil, Katarzyna; Kamińska, Anna; Piątkowska, Daria; Sokólska, Anna; Żarnowska, Joanna
The following article presents the description of seven geological and tourist routes in the southern part of the Danish island called Bornholm. The fieldwork, which took place during the expedition of the Geography Students’ Scientific Group from the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, included photographic documentation and the location of rock concentrations by means of a GPS receiver. The researched routes reveal both geological diversity of the island – Precambrian, Palaeozoic, and Mesozoic rocks, as well as tourist sites, such as round churches, historical windmills, rune stones and numerous attractions of major cities of the island.

The geotourist attractions in the vicinity of Szczawnica spa
(2014) Golonka, Jan; Waśkowska-Oliwa, Anna; Doktor, Marek; Krobicki, Michał; Słomka, Tadeusz
The main aim of this paper is presentation of the most characteristic outcrops/geological monuments, which occur in Szczawnica spa vicinity and are perfect geotouristic objects. These objects are presented with short geological/geomorphological remarks about their origin, development and significance in natural sciences. They provide the excellent inanimate natural monuments (geotourist trail in Pieniny Mountains from Szczawnica to Červený Kláštor, Palenica Mountain, Zawiasy area, Bryjarka Mountain, Jarmuta Mountain and Zaskalnik Waterfall), which can be used for better understanding of the history of our Earth and numerous geological processes, which „sculptured” its surface, especially very complicated geological story of the Pieniny Klippen Belt.

The Science and Technology Centre „Energy” in Karlino – the project of a new geotourist attraction in Western Pomerania
(2014) Głąbiński, Zbigniew
Western Pomerania is a region that is known among tourists mainly because of the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. Most of the more than 2 million tourists, who visit the region each year, come in summer and head straight for the beach resorts. This leads to a significant space-time concentration of tourism activity, which is not a favourable development in terms of the preservation of natural assets or for socio-economic reasons. The region is perceived as not attractive for cognitive tourism, including geotourism. The eruption of oil and gas in Karlino in 1980 belongs to one of the most interesting events in the recent history of the region. This event has inspired the Karlino municipal authorities to appoint a modern educational museum to commemorate the event and to creatively present the formation processes of energy fuels throughout the geological history of the Earth. The creation of this facility would be an excellent opportunity to popularize geological knowledge among numerous tourists visiting the nearby beach resorts and would also contribute to the socio-economic activation of the residents of the Karlino municipality.

Surface Karst Landforms of the Notranjska region (south-western Slovenia)
(2014) Gawor, Łukasz; Jonczy, Iwona
The distribution and characteristics of surface karst landforms in the Notranjska region, exemplified in the Cerknisica and Rak river catchment, is presented. The geomorphology of the examined area, with respect to on the micro-, meso- and macro-forms division, is described. The course and dynamics of morphogenetic and geological processes are analyzed. A geotourist route linking the described landforms of surface karst is proposed.

Stratovolcanoes in the Western Cordillera – Polish Scientific Expedition to Peru 2003–2012 reconnaissance research
(2014) Gałaś, Andrzej; Panajew, Paweł; Cuber, Piotr Krzysztof
The Polish Scientific Expedition has been carrying out research in the Colca Canyon and the Valley of the Volcanoes (South Peru) since 2003. The National Park project, covering the mentioned areas, is the main purpose of the research. The extent and genesis of the Quaternary volcanic Andahua group is the leading theme of the investigation. The study area is surrounded with numerous Pliocene and Pleistocene stratovolcanoes: Ampato (6,288 m a.s.l.), Chachani (6,057 m a.s.l.), multi-cone Coropuna (6,425 m a.s.l.) and others. Some of them are still active, such as Misti (5,822 m a.s.l.) or Sabancaya (5,967 m a.s.l.) and pose a real hazard to the local population. In 2003–2012, the participants of the Polish Scientific Expedition climbed several times on volcanic peaks, gaining new experience and comparative samples for study.
