Resource storage management model for ensuring quality of service in the cloud archive systems
(2014) Kapanowski, Mariusz; Słota, Renata; Kitowski, Jacek
Nowadays, service providers offer a lot of IT services in the public or private cloud. Clients can buy various kinds of services, such as SaaS, PaaS, etc. Recently, Backup as a Service (BaaS), a variety of SaaS, was introduced there. At the moment, there are several different BaaS’s available to archive data in the cloud, but they provide only a basic level of service quality. In this paper, we propose a model which ensures QoS for BaaS and some methods for management of storage resources aimed at achieving the required SLA.This model introduces a set of parameters responsible for an SLA level which can be offered at the basic or higher level of quality. The storage systems (typically HSM), which are distributed between several Data Centers, are built based on disk arrays, VTL’s, and tape libraries. The RSMM model does not assume bandwidth reservation or control, but rather is focused on management of storage resources.

Semantic text indexing
(2014) Kaleta, Zbigniew
The following article presents a specific issue of semantic analysis of texts in natural language – text indexing and describes one field of its application (web browsing). The main part of this article describes a computer system assigning a set of semantic indexes (similar to keywords) to a particular text. The indexing algorithm employs a semantic dictionary to find specific words in a text that represent a text content. Furthermore, it compares two given sets of semantic indexes to determine similarities between texts (assigning a numerical value). The article describes the semantic dictionary – a tool essential to accomplish this task and its usefulness, the main concepts of the algorithm, and the test results.

An agent-based hierarchical approach for executing bag-of-tasks in clouds
(2014) Funika, Włodzimierz; Mazurek, Kamil; Kruczkowski, Wojciech
Unlike message-passing applications, “bag-of-tasks” applications (BoTs), whose tasks are unrelated and independent (no inter-task communication), can be highly parallelized and executed in any acceptable order. A common practice when executing bag-of-tasks applications (BoT) is to exploit the master-slave topology. Cloud environments offer some features that facilitate the execution of BoT applications. One of the approaches to control-cloud resources is to use agents that are flexible actors in a dynamic environment. Given these assumptions, we have designed a combination of approaches which can be classified as distributed, hierarchical solutions to the issue of scalable execution of bag-of-tasks. The concept of our system relates to a project that is focused on processing huge quantities of incoming data from a network of sensors through the Internet. Our aim is to create a mechanism for processing such data as a system that executes jobs while exploiting load balancing for cloud resources which use applications such as Eucalyptus. The idea is to create a hybrid architecture which takes advantage of some centralized parts of the system and full distributedness in other parts. On the other hand, we balance dependencies between system components using a hierarchical master-slave structure.

Model checking processes specified in join-calculus algebra
(2014) Dobrowolski, Grzegorz; Maludziński, Sławomir P.
This article presents a model checking tool used to verify concurrent systems specified in join-calculus algebra. The temporal properties of systems under verification are expressed in CTL logic. Join-calculus algebra, with its operational semantics defined by a chemical abstract machine, serves as the basic method for the specification of concurrent systems and their synchronization mechanisms, allowing for the examination of more complex systems. The described model checker is a proof of concept for the utilization of new methodologies of formal system specification and verification in software engineering practice.

Urbancontext: a management model for pervasive environments in user-oriented urban computing
(2014) Zúñiga Cañón, Claudia Liliana; Burguillo, Juan C.
Nowadays, urban computing has gained a lot of interest in regards to guiding the evolution of cities into intelligent environments. These environments can be appropriated for interactions between individuals that may ultimately affect and modify their behavior. These changes require new approaches that allow us to better understand how urban computing systems should be modeled. In this work, we present UrbanContext – a new model for designing urban computing platforms that applies the theory of roles to manage the individual’s context in urban environments. The theory of roles helps us understand the individual’s behavior within a social environment, allowing us to model urban computing systems capable of adapting to an individual’s states and needs. In order to optimize social interaction and offer secure services, Urban-Context collects data in urban atmospheres and classifies behavior according to the individual’s change of roles. Likewise, UrbanContext serves as a generic model to provide interoperability as well as facilitate design, implementation, and expansion of urban computing systems.

Public cloud computing for software as a service platforms
(2014) Soboń, Michał; Nawrocki, Piotr
As cloud computing becomes increasingly popular among enterprises, organizations, and developers, it is time to consider how Software as a Service solutions can be built rapidly and cost-effectively. This paper presents the possibility of using a service-based architecture operating within the framework of the public cloud computing model and implementing Software as a Service. It also descri- bes the architecture, implementation, and testing of sample applications. The conclusions drawn, with respect to related work and the results obtained, shed more light on the application of public cloud systems for Software as a Service purposes.
