    Analysis of the potential heating of selected student residences at The AGH University Of Krakow using the earth’s heat

    The aim of this study was to adapt the operating parameters of a geothermal heat pump system to the required average power needed to meet the energy for central heating and domestic hot water of selected student residences. Calculations of the average power required by the dormitories in the AGH University Student Campus were carried out, as well as modelling of the deep borehole heat exchanger for the heating load. The designed heating system for the student residences in the AGH University Student Campus using a deep borehole heat exchanger – is sufficient to cover the base heat demand for five four-storey dormitories. During the writing of the paper, the main problem was the low availability of articles on deep borehole heat exchangers. This is due to the continuous development and testing of new engineering ideas. Deep borehole heat exchangers can be use as new boreholes or wells prepared for liquidation. Also use of closed boreholes sometimes is possible, depending on project of liquidation. The future districy heating will use low-temperature heat carrier for heating and cooling. Use borehole fields as rockmass use for heat and/or cool ,storage will be common.

    Geological and drilling aspects of construction and exploitation geothermal systems HDR/EGS

    The article presents an overview of developing unconventional geothermal systems, such as Hot Dry Rock Systems (HDR), where is used the heat of dry rock and enhanced system with smali water tributary called Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). These systems provide utilization of geothermal energy in reservoirs (i.a. granites) where conventional methods are not possible to use. Operation HDR/EGS involves the use rock heating through warming medium, which flowing between the production and injection boreholes. In most cases medium introduced artifically by hydraulic fracturing. Currently, most of the projects HDR/EGS is in the implementation phase. Based on gathered materials an analysis of the construction and exploitation geothermal systems. Take into account geological and drilling aspects.

    The use of a heater and borehole heat exchangers for the regeneration of heat resources in the rock mass on the example of the Geoenergetics Laboratory, AGH UST

    The regeneration of rock mass heat resources with the use of four sources can be done with the use of installations owned by the Geoenergetics Laboratory, Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas AGH UST. This paper is devoted to one of them, i.e. an air heater. In the case of increased thermal energy consumption the rock mass can be excessively cooled, which may cause problems with providing thermal standard for buildings making use of ground as a source of heat. New additional sources supplementing the process of heat resources regeneration is a key element of maintaining the high efficiency of the heating-cooling system. A real case exemplifying how free thermal energy can be stored with an air heater in the summer season is discussed in this paper. The procedure and respective conclusions are analyzed. The results of most important measurements are tabularized and their functions plotted in the form graphs.

    Rock mass thermal analysis in underground thermal energy storage (UTES)

    In the article, there has been described research conducted in underground thermal energy storage (UTES). There have been also presented temperature measurements led in thermo-piezometric boreholes. On the basis of the measurements, the correctness assessment of borehole heat exchangers (BHE) arrangement has been accomplished.

    New borehole heat exchangers in the Geoenergetics Laboratory at the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas, AGH UST in Krakow

    The Geoenergetics Laboratory at the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas in Krakow is presented in this paper to mark its 10th anniversary. The origins of the Laboratory, its equipment and the design of borehole heat exchangers belonging to the field research station are also discussed. Recently, the construction of 14 new borehole heat exchangers was designed and the boreholes will be drilled in the area of AGH University. They will perform heating and cooling for the new S1 building of the University. Every borehole heat exchanger will be tested, with the effective thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistivity calculated after a thermal response test on every borehole. The differ? ence between boreholes should show the difference of borehole thermal resistivity, but the effective thermal conductivity should be the same.

    Hydraulic fracturing in systems of geothermal energy utilization (EGS, HDR)

    This work reviews possibility of using the heat from impermeable hot dry rock formations. Significant development in hydraulic fracturing technique in a last few years have a result in making accessible sources of energy from impermeable rocks, including hot dry rocks, which wasn't possible before. This paper presents the idea of utilization the EGS system which is based on forced and closed water circulation in a natural and permeable geological reservoir or in a reservoir, where the fractured zone was created artificially by for example hydraulic fracturing treatment. The article shows also an examples of recent EGS/HDR systems around the world.

    Specifying the number of borehole heat exchangers based on thermal response test and geoenergetic analysis

    For the correct design, the number and the location of borehole heat exchangers, it is necessary to know thermal properties of rocks and the exchanger. This applies particularly to larger installations, more than 100 kW. One of the methods of determining these values is Thermal Response Test. This method is based on measurements in the first drilled borehole heat exchanger. Based on results of the TRT geothermal analysis is made. The analysis defines: the number of wells, the arrangement of wells, and the parameters of temperature of heat carrier after long-term use. This analysis based on calculations using specialist software. This paper presents the determination of the number of borehole heat exchangers and working conditions (temperature of the heat carrier) of an underground heat reservoir accessed using borehole heat exchangers for the building of the Primary School in Myszków.

    Comparative analysis of borehole heat exchanger use in different climatic conditions

    The climatic conditions and the heating and cooling load between Ghent, Belgium, and Krakow, Poland, are compared. The cost of heating and cooling is calculated and compared. Heating in Belgium is done by using natural gas, just like in Poland, but due to higher gas prices, cost of heating is higher in Belgium than in Poland. That is why an interesting alternative for heating and cooling, namely borehole heat exchanger coupled with a heat pump, is calculated. This seems to be an economic and environmentally friendly alternative for heating and cooling.

    Demand for heat from rock mass and borehole heat exchangers for a ventilation system in case of the auditorium at the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas at AGH UST in Krakow

    While calculating the heat demand for a ventilation system, the average monthly dry-bulb temperature is taken as the external temperature. While analysing a facility for public use, dedicated for 150 people and possessing a large share of transparent external walls it was shown, that using an hourly temperature in calculations, the obtained total energy demand (i.e. for heating and air conditioning) is 22% higher than the result obtained while taking into account an average monthly temperature. The obtained result points out the necessity of an individual approach to any large room, taking into consideration a temperature in a period of time significantly shorter than one month.

    Drilling bits in percussive-rotary drilling technology (down the hole DTH)

    This paper addresses the issue of drillbits for drilling normal and large diameter boreholes with the use of percussion-rotary method. The most important elements of drillbits, i.e. sintered carbide inserts of different shapes have been described. The hardness of the drilled rock determines the shape of used sintered carbide inserts and the shape of the drillbit face. The cluster hammers, used for drilling large diameter DTH, have been also presented.
