    Basic unit size in the analysis of the distribution of spatial landscape elements on the basis of the lithostratigraphic geodiversity of the Ojców National Park (Poland)

    Spatial analyses of landscape element diversity are always carried out on the basis of a previously established analytical grid. It divides the research area into 'n' smaller areas - basic units before calculating various landscape measures for each of them. The selection of an appropriate analytical grid, particularly its cell size, is a key issue for the results obtained and conclusions drawn from them. The article describes the procedure of empirical selection of a basic unit size in the medium-scale landscape and geodiversity analyses employing a regular analytical grid with square cells. The established methodology was based on observations of the distribution of the number of studied feature categories in the analytical grid fields. The correctness measures for the selection of the optimal basic unit size were the distributions themselves, as well as selected descriptive statistical parameters. The conducted analyses accurately illustrate the dependences between the variable size of the basic unit size and the number of the studied feature categories. The research conducted proves that the simple empirical approximation of the optimal basic unit size is possible. The proposed procedure allowed the determination of the optimal basic unit size for the variation of the lithostratigraphic units of the Ojców National Park. The optimal unit size for the accuracy data typical for a reference scale 1:50 000 was specified as 500 m.

    Geotourist maps of the Sudetic Geostrada Trail as a new form of popularization of geotourism in the Sudety Mts.

    The aim of the paper is the presentation of Geological tourist maps of the Sudetic Geostrada Trail, which were prepared during the development of the project: »The Sudetic Geostrada – geological and landscape studies heritage with an inventory of the objects of abiotic nature« (2008–2011). The main aim of the project was to popularize the geological-mining heritage and abiotic nature of the Sudety Mts. The maps are synthetic, multi-sheet, cartographic development prepared in three versions: a geotourist map of the Sudetic Geostrada Trail at a 1 : 25 000 scale (on a base geological map), a geological and mining heritage map of the Sudetic Geostrada Trail, on a base topographic map at a 1 : 25 000 scale and Geosites localization maps at a 1 : 10 000 scale. The main thematic layers of the maps present the most important and attractive geosites, protected objects of biotic nature, objects of infrastructure and tourist attractions. Main recipients of these maps can be tourists and local governments. The maps may become important tools in popularizing and promoting geotourism in the Sudety Mts.

    The aim of the paper is presentation of geological and landscape studies with the inventarization of abiotic nature objects located along proposed trail »The Leszek Sawicki Sudetic Geostrada«. Through detailed descriptions of the trail and proposals of development of selected, most attractive geosites of geological-mining heritage, the project should aim to spread geological knowledge of the Sudety Mts. among the non-professionals. Using the passable roads, the trail was led along the main ridges of the Sudety Mts. in both the Polish and the Czech parts, through less popular and rarely visited but also interesting parts of the Sudety Mts. and their foreland. Polish parts of the Geostrada (ca 285 km) were such determined to reach as much the most attractive geosites as possible in the 10-kilometers-wide zone ($\pm$ 5 km from both sides of the trail).

    The Eastern Sudetic Geostrada (Geotrail) constitutes only a small, eastermost fragment of the whole »Sudetic Geostrada« tourist trail project. Hence, the number of geosites selected along the trail is rather limited. The westernmost site is the famous Sławniowice quarry. Here, in 16 active and inactive pits the Precambrian marbles and accompanying rocks (mica schists, amphibolites and pegmatites) have been quarried since the XIIIth century. Stones extracted there are well-known in Poland and in Germany, usually as facings. However, the most intrising part of the Eastern Sudetic Geostrada is the vicinity of Głuchołazy. In the town itself and in the valley of the Biała Głuchołaska River as well as in the adjacent Jeseniki and Zlaté Hory mountains in the Czech Republic gold has been mined from alluvial deposits as well as from quartz and quartz-feldspar lodes. The relics of this mining operations are numerous adits and shafts, which can be recently seen along the promenade accompanying the Biała Głuchołaska River bank. Other sites attractive for the Earth-science enthusiasts are: granitoids of the Strzelin-Žulova Massif in Jarnołtów, Precambrian marbles in Gierałcice and biotitic schists in Burgrabice. The last site in the Polish sector of the Eastern Sudetic Geostrada is the operating slate quarry in Jarnołtówek where phyllitic schists are extracted and used as roof tiles.

    Atrakcje geoturystyczne Geostrady Zachodniosudeckiej

    The paper presents selected results of the »Western Sudetic Geostrada« - a project, currently in preparation, which merges geosites, biotic nature objects, historical monuments and tourist infrastructure into a coherent tourist trail. The trail avoids main roads and famous tourist centers, leading to the less known parts of the Western Sudety Mts. and their foreland. Precisely, the »Western Sudetic Geostrada« runs around the main range of the Isera Mountains, surrounds from the north the Karkonosze Range and the Jelenia Góra Trough, and heads through the eastern and southern part of the Rudawy Janowickie Range. From geological point of view the trail runs through the exposed part of the exhumed metamorphic envelope the Karkonosze granite intrusion rich in numerous deposits and occurrences of ore mineralization. The selected geomorphological and geological objects and regions were described in details along with the relics of past mining operations and their tourist attractiveness were evaluated. Some especially attractive objects i.e. geomorphological forms, outcrops of interesting lithologic complexes, tectonic structures and remnants of past ore mining (tin mining in Krobica-Kotlina-Gierczyn-Przecznica area and uranium mining in Kowary) were described in details.

    Raster images generalization in the context of research on the structure of landscape and geodiversity

    Generalization is one of the most important stages of work on cartographic data. It has a particular importance in the study of landscape structure, especially geodiversity. In raster images, it is based on modifying the structure of the image while maintaining its general characteristics. In ArcGIS software, the most important tools for generalization of raster images include: Boundary Clean and Majority Filter. Fragstat software was used for the analysis of structural modifications of the output images and assessment of the effects of generalization. Depending on the options used, both tools (Boundary Clean and Majority Filter) cause different types of modifications in rasters. Elimination of the so-called noise using one of the variants of Majority Filter is the most suitable if we wish to introduce only subtle modifications to the final image. If, however, we expect a greater level of interference in the structure of the source images, using Boundary Clean becomes necessary.

    Przyczynek do badań lokalnej, poziomej zmienności głównych parametrów jakości węgla brunatnego w centralnej części złoża Bełchatów. Analizy statystyczne

    The Bełchatów lignite deposit is located in the central part of Poland, in the tectonic Kleszczów graben. The theme of researches has been statistical analysis of local, horizontal variability selected depositional parameters from small area (8x8 m), located in the central part of the Bełchatów area. In the investigations was used statistical methods like descriptive statistics, distribution analysis, correlation and regression analysis. Results of the descriptive statistics of the main lignite qualitative parameters beyond little lower capacity of the total sulfur content parameter are contained in to limits which are published by the Bełchatów mine. The researches shows the statistical significance local, horizontal variability of ash and sulfur contents. Simple and multiple linear correlation and regression analysis acknowledge known from literature relations between moisture, ash content and calorific value.

    The aim of the paper is presentation of a geological and landscape studies with inventarization of the objects of abiotic nature heritage located along the central part of proposed trail »The Leszek Sawicki Sudetic Geostrada«. The Central Sudetic Geostrada extends from the Kowary Pass in the west to the Płoszczyna Pass near Stronie Śląskie in the east. Total length of this sector of Geostrada is about 200 km, in which about 60 km in the Czech Republic. The principle is to run the trail in such a manner that attractive geosites and other interesting tourist destinations fall into the 10-kilometers-wide zone ($\pm$ 5 km zone from both sides of the road). First of all, these are groups of sandstone monadnocks in the Table Mts., but also numerous geosites close to Lądek Zdrój: caves, including the famous »Bear Cave«, mineral waters, gneiss tors, the famous waterfall on the Wilczka River, numerous marble and basalt quarries and relics of old mining camps.

    Szlachtowski obszar eksploatacji kruszców jako element projektowanego geoparku »Pieniny«

    One of the most interesting objects of the future Pieniny geopark would be the Jarmuta and Patkowski stream adits. Traces of the mining heritage of an exploitation area of Szlachtowa ore are characterized by high scientific, historical, educational and cognitive values. The extraction of ore minerals which took place probably from XIV to XVIII century was connected with presence of polymetallic veins and hydrothermal processes around the andesite intrusions of the Eastern Polish part of the Pieniny Andesite Line (PAL). Historical mines exploited epithermal, poor gold-silver deposites. The land use within the Pieniny Geopark might contribute to reduction in tourist flows in the most popular and crowded parts of the Pieniny Mts
