In this work, the method of the localization of the external dump using the computer algorithm A-star has been presented. Due to this algorithm it was possible to indicate the most profitable localization of overburden masses from the opening cut while the opening process of the lignite deposit, which should approximate the lowest costs of dumping. As the research object it was received the youngest open pit in Poland - „Tomisławice open pit", which is the part of Konin Mine. Based on this open pit, the conditions on the localization of external dump has been described, then the discretization rules on elementary areas for the potential field destined for the localization of external dump have been qualified as well as the methodology of attribution value estimation of these elementary areas in the context if building on its the dump has been presented. To lead the collection of elementary areas, which characterize surface under the building of external dump the theory of pathfinding and graph traversal as well as algorithm A-star has been used.
