Description

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the deterioration of stone elements and mortar taken from the elevation of the 12th-century church of St. Nicholas at Kopernika Street in Krakow, before its renovation. The research included microscopic observations using an optical microscope and an electron scanning microscope with a chemical analysis composition at point(SEM-EDS) as well as phase analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRPD) and micro-raman spectroscopy. The analysis allowed to observe that in addition to the minerals originally building limestone and sandstone, in layers, there are sulphate phases, e.g. gypsum. In addition, bassanit, coquimbit, ettryngit are assumed to be mortar components It is not excluded that the presence of SO2 was necessary for their formation, by means of transformations. The occurrence of elements Cu, Ti, Zn, P, Pb, Ba was observed in the sediments of the limestones and the presence of Ni, Mn, Sr, Cr was found in sandstone layering. It was found that atmospheric pollution contributes to the increased deterioration of the stone elements of the city's buildings, intensifying the natural process of their destruction.
