This chapter presents selected research activities of three faculties of AGH University related to the efficiency of energy generation and use, with a particular focus on distributed energy systems. It covers combustion and cooling processes, energy management in buildings, and the integration of renewable energy sources with storage technologies. The development of methods for assessing smart readiness of buildings (SRI) and modelling of hybrid energy systems is also addressed. The work supports the energy transition and the implementation of modern local solutions.

The presented chapter presents the results of the work carried out by the wind energy team and thin-film and organic photovoltaics, as well as alternative energy technologies. It di¬scusses methods for supporting the operation of distributed energy systems, modeling components of wind power plants, de¬signing and validating modern wind turbines, and the outcomes of research on innovative technologies such as microscale solar in¬stallations (a solar chimney with heat storage, photovoltaic modu¬les equipped with water-based cooling and cleaning systems), and high-temperature heat storage. The chapter also covers methods of modifying absorbers in organic cells and the fabrication and testing of thin film oxide cells and optical electrochromic filters for space applications.

Energy storage plays a key role in the energy transition process by enabling the effective integration of renewable energy sources, increasing the flexibility of power systems, and improving the reliability of energy supply. This article presents selected research directions pursued at the AGH University of Krakow, focused on issues related to energy storage and the operation of storage systems. Some chapters contain independent studies addressing a broad spectrum of technological and engineering challenges. These include aspects of electrochemical, material, thermal, geothermal, mechanical, and power systems. The article is interdisciplinary, application-oriented, and implementation-focused. It emphasizes the importance of conducting research on the development and integration of advanced energy storage technologies and innovative technical solutions tailored to the needs and challenges of modern power systems.

Geotermia i pompy ciepła
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2025) Chmielowska, Anna; Harcouet-Menou, Virginie; Kaczmarczyk, Michał; Kowalski, Tomasz; Luboń, Wojciech; Pełka, Grzegorz; Sapińska-Śliwa, Aneta; Silva, Mario; Sowiżdżał, Anna; Szczotka, Krzysztof; Śliwa, Tomasz; Tomaszewska, Barbara; Vestavik, Ola; Wangen, Magnus; Wojnarowski, Paweł
The article presents contemporary trends and challenges in the area of heat and cooling supply in the context of the develop-ment of "intelligent" heating and heating-cooling networks (smart grids) and the development of distributed heating (energy). The authors of the article share their experiences from scientific and research, experimental and development work and teaching carried out within the framework of national and international projects. The article discusses the comprehensive scope of activities of the Research Teams of the Department of Energy Resources at AGH.

Energetyka a środowisko
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2025) Burmistrz, Piotr; Gazda-Grzywacz, Magdalena; Górecki, Jerzy; Grzywacz, Przemysław; Motak, Monika; Olkuski, Tadeusz; Samojeden, Bogdan; Jacek Sobczyk, Eugeniusz; Sobczyk, Wiktoria; Styszko, Katarzyna; Szramowiat-Sala, Katarzyna; Uchmanowicz, Dominika
The chapter presents ways of producing energy in accordance with the idea of sustainable development. The implementation of European environmental policy through a circular economy is described. The importance of access to environmental data and modern measurement techniques in quantitative and qualitative analyses was emphasised. The benefits of using classical methods and deep and reinforcement learning techniques for modelling energy processes were indicated. The use of innovative catalytic and sorptive materials for waste gas purification and carbon dioxide conversion and management is discussed. The importance of identifying and quantifying critical points along the fuel value chain is demonstrated. The importance of investment and regulatory decisions in the decarbonisation process is presented.
