Item type:Doctoral Dissertation, Access status: Open Access , Wpływ składowisk Zakładów Chemicznych "Tarnowskie Góry" na stan chemiczny wód podziemnych w ich rejonie(Data obrony: 2007) Gzyl, Grzegorz
Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaFormer chemical industry plant "Tarnowskie Góry" in Upper Silesia region (Southern Poland) operated from 1921 to 1995. 1,7 milion tones of toxic and dangerous waste remained there, covering approximately 34 ha. Since the waste was unsealed, the contaminants migrated easily from the dumps through the unsaturated zone into groundwater. The plant is located in recharge area of two Major Groundwater Basins: MGB 327 Lubliniec-Myszków and MGB 330 Gliwice. These aquifers provide the water resources for several surrounding cities. The dynamics of groundwater chemical parameters in the vicinity of ex chemical plant "Tarnowskie Góry" have been assessed, basing on the data from local monitoring network. Furthermore, groundwater flow and transport models have been developed in order to forecast the changes in groundwater quality in the perspective of 25, 50, 100and l50years. The results show serious degradation of groundwater quality, especially due to contamination with boron. Forecasted changes of groundwater quality in time are rather slow; even in the case of absolute liquidation of contamination source, the serious improvement of groundwater quality might be reached no sooner that after several tens of years.
