Ultrasonic method of nondestructive testing is especially applicable in determining the state of the art of rock deterioration and in forecasting and controlling further stages of changes. Tested were, alike, fresh rock samples and samples of deteriorated stoneworks from various locations, subjected to artificial ageing by cyclic freezing, saturating with salt solutions leading to fast drying and crystallizing of salts, and increasing of rock temperature. Wydział Geologii, Geofizyki i Ochrony ŚrodowiskaIn Poland travertine deposits can be found in the north part of Krakowsko-Wieluńska Upland, in the area of Działoszyn. Travertines are used mainly to produce aggregate but because of their decorative qualities and possibilities to acquire their large blocks, they are more often used as building material. Research in the area was conducted in order to complete the subject of this master’s thesis. During the research there were lithological profiles drawn up in two quarries Raciszyn and Raciszyn 2 and the varieties of limestones were emanated according to their macroscopic features. In the next part there was lab research using microscope and transitive light conducted and research of physical and mechanical properties as well. The latter, enabled to assign macroscopic to particular microscopic varieties. The tested limestones from deposits of the area of Działoszyn vary in the mineral content and the attitude of occurring minerals which leads to change of their physical and mechanical properties.
