    The Use of Lean Tools i n the Food Industry

    Lean, as a concept focused on eliminating waste, optimizing processes, and creating customer value, has enjoyed widespread applications across numerous industries. However, its effective implementation requires adaptation to the specific characteristics of a given sector and enterprise. This article presents an evaluation and analysis of the use of Lean Management and selected Lean tools in an enterprise operating in the food industry. Based on a structured literature review, the paper outlines the origins, fundamental assumptions, and key tools associated with Lean Manufacturing. Subsequently, an empirical study based on a questionnaire survey was conducted among employees of a food industry company that has been applying the Lean Management concept for several years and systematically uses a range of Lean tools to optimize and improve its processes. The findings provided the basis for the formulation of conclusions confirming the applicability and effectiveness of the Lean Management approach in the food industry, as well as for identifying and evaluating the extent of the use of individual Lean tools. The results may serve as a starting point for further research and support practical implementations of Lean in food industry enterprises.

    Significant and Trivial Dependencies Separation in Data Tensor by the Projection Method

    The problem of data structure analysis through their multidimensional representation as a d-dimensional tensor is considered to assess dependencies on influencing factors in the decision-making process. The higher-order Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is developed as a d-SVD schema to identify significant and trivial dependencies. The d-SVD includes the SVD of the tensor reshaped as a matrix and the SVDs of reduced size of the previous SVD vectors reshaped as matrices. The entropy of the distribution of the Singular Values (SVs) of the vectors’ decomposition is used for the separation of the significant and trivial vectors, in contrast to the commonly used approach based on the magnitude analysis of SVs. The singular projection in the significant vector space in selected dimensions gives the tensor’s low-rank approximation without loss of information in comparison with the truncated SVD. The tensor projection on a vector subspace of reduced dimension can be obtained by using a part of the SVs and the corresponding vectors as an alternative to the commonly used averaging. It was shown that data prediction in the subspace of the significant vectors allows stable assessments of the predicted values to be obtained.

    Hybrid Optimization for Secure and Timely Medical Logistics: A Case Study in Burkina Faso

    Transportation logistics plays a critical role in ensuring equitable access to medical supplies in low-infrastructure and insecure environments. This paper proposes a three-stage hybrid framework to solve a Vehicle Routing Problem with Safety and Time Windows (VRP-ST) in high-risk contexts. The methodology combines a Clarke–Wright savings heuristic for rapid initialization, an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) metaheuristic to minimize a risk-adjusted distance objective, and Google OR-Tools to strictly enforce hard constraints, including vehicle capacities and delivery time windows. The approach is evaluated on a nationwide case study involving 44 healthcare centers in Burkina Faso. The results show a 19% reduction in total risk-adjusted distance (from 10,425 to 8,280 units) relative to the initial heuristic solution, together with improved fleet utilization. Beyond this case study, the framework provides a robust and fully feasible decision-support tool for medical logistics planning in crisis-affected regions. A sensitivity analysis under ±10% demand and risk-penalty perturbations confirms the stability of the solutions.

    What Can AHP/ANP Do for SIX SIGMA? A Short Literature Survey

    Six Sigma offers a robust and widely applicable methodology for tackling practical decision-making challenges across various industries. Complementarily, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) provide a universal framewo rk for decision support in diverse applications. Given their inherent strengths, these methodologies appear to be a natural fit for one another. However, it remains uncertain whether this synergistic potential is fully leveraged within current Six Sigma practices and its derivative methodologies. This paper presents a concise literature survey to ascertain the extent to which Six Sigma practitioners utilize AHP/ANP. The findings from this survey will then be used to identify current trends and highlight existing gaps in harnessing the full potential of AHP/ANP within the Six Sigma framework.

    Critical Success Factors for Six Sigma Implementation – A Case Study from an Automotive Company Located in Poland

    Six Sigma is a widely adopted method across many companies from different industries based in various locations in the world. As the proper implementation of Six Sigma is critical for the further success of the method in companies, researchers and practitioners are analyzing which factors play an important role in early stages of adaptation. This paper refers to Critical Success Factors (CSF) analyzed in various types of companies, industries and locations. Additionally, the paper brings the perspective of the problem from a company in the automotive sector of Poland. Survey studies on Critical Success Factors (CSF) for Six Sigma implementation were performed across engineering teams working on product development and process optimization. The summarized results show the perspective of Six Sigma practitioners on the most important factors, specific to the given sector and location. The findings offer valuable insights for managers who are defining Six Sigma implementation strategies and teams which are planning individual implementation steps. The results are important for companies in Poland but also can be generalized for any Six Sigma implementation practices.

    E-sourcing Platform for Improving Communication and Optimizing Supply Chains of Textile Companies

    The news predicted that all areas would have experienced significant disruptions from the start of the COVID-19 health crisis. At the economic scale of manufacturing companies, supply chains have been much more disrupted, which has often been justified by delays in delivery schedules. The results were considered to be harmful and had a negative influence on productive systems. By choosing the textile sector, our study began with an analysis of the information and communication systems of a limited number of companies; from the results of this analysis, we concluded that the fragility of these systems was the reason for the inabilities of certain supply chains to maintain their stability during the crisis. So, the solution to remedy this type of problem was to propose an e-sourcing platform that connects all of the companies that are active in this sector and those who are in direct contact with them to create a web network where the procurement procedures are similar – starting with the search for suppliers, and going as far as signing contracts online with a view of this research.

    Adoption of Electromobility in Urban Transport in Poland – Cost-Benefit Trade-Offs and Decision-Making Challenges

    Electromobility is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of sustainable urban transport strategies. This paper presents an analysis of selected economic, environmental, and infrastructural implications of transitioning from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) in urban settings. Through a cost-benefit analysis, the study compares the purchase and operating costs of EVs and conventional cars across mini, compact, and premium market segments, accounting for factors such as energy consumption, fuel and electricity prices, annual mileage, and carbon emissions. The development and expansion of charging infrastructure, along with the integration of smart grid solutions and energy storage capabilities, are examined in the context of meeting the growing demand from a rising fleet of EVs. Additionally, the paper analyzes changes in urban mobility behaviors, highlighting the shift toward shared mobility and ecomobility, and discusses how these trends can reshape urban transportation to improve quality of life and reduce environmental impacts. Drawing on current trends, national electromobility development plans in Poland, and international best practices, the study identifies challenges and enablers for policymakers and decision-makers in the transportation and energy sectors, highlighting the need for coordinated planning and policy support to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of electromobility in urban environments.

    How to Interpret AHP/ANP Application Results in a Really Meaningful Manner?

    Final decision recommendations rely heavily on ranking Decision-Making Units (DMUs), often achieved using Saaty’s Analytic Hierarchy/Network Process (AHP/ANP). AHP/ANP provides precise overall priority scores which decision-makers commonly treat as definitive for ranking purposes. This reliance means that even minimal numerical differences between DMUs are used to determine the final selection. However, this strict adherence to tiny numerical distinctions – disregarding the actual degree of difference – is problematic. Practically, it risks rejecting DMUs whose performance is only slightly inferior, methodologically, it contradicts the qualitative nature of the input (pairwise comparisons) with the quantitative output. This tension raises the question of achieving an adequate qualitative interpretation of the quantitative rankings. To resolve this, the paper proposes clustering approaches to help decision-makers reliably group and discriminate among similar DMUs. These methods aim to justify more informed choices by avoiding spurious precision. The approaches were tested using two diverse decision cases. The results are promising and indicate that these clustering techniques can be useful under certain specific circumstances.

    Operations Research in Municipal Solid Waste Management: Decision-Making Problems, Applications, and Research Gaps

    Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) represents a complex, multi-level decision domain that involves strategic, tactical, and operational planning under economic, environmental, and social constraints. This paper reviews the state of Operations Research (OR) applications to MSWM. The analysis encompasses optimization, simulation, metaheuristic, and hybrid approaches that address decision problems ranging from facility siting and capacity expansion to routing and scheduling. The study classifies OR contributions across decision levels, identifying methodological patterns and dominant model types such as mixed-integer programming, metaheuristics, and simulation-optimization frameworks. Despite significant progress in optimization and the integration of sustainability, critical gaps remain in uncertainty modeling, system-wide integration, and data-driven decision support. Deterministic formulations prevail at the strategic and tactical levels, while uncertainty is mainly explored in operational routing. Cross-level coordination among infrastructure planning, fleet design, and daily operations remains underdeveloped. Furthermore, persistent data scarcity and the limited incorporation of behavioral factors constrain the practical applicability of OR models. The review concludes with a research agenda that advocates for multi-level, uncertainty-aware, and dynamic optimization frameworks, supported by standardized data infrastructures and behavioral insights.

    Analysis of Six Sigma Tools Utilization in Phases of DMAIC Cycle

    Six Sigma has been developed and successfully used in many organizations for many years. The use of Six Sigma in process-improvement requires the systematic and disciplined use of specific tools and techniques in the DMAIC cycle. The DMAIC cycle includes five phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control this is one of the most popular Six Sigma improvement cycles that are used in improving existing processes. When improving processes in accordance with the DMAIC cycle, it is important to have knowledge of the tools and techniques that are used and the ability to select them for the specifics of a project and the appropriate phases of the cycle. This article critically reviews the literature on the use of individual tools in the appropriate phases of the DMAIC cycle and uses a semi-structured interview method with specialists in the field of using Six Sigma. The obtained results of the analyses can contribute to the study of the validity of using individual tools and techniques for the effective use of Six Sigma and provide a useful comparative review for theoreticians and practitioners who want to use the appropriate tools in the DMAIC cycle.
