Economic versus cultural determinants of changes in employment of people with disabilities. Good practices in Poland
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Giermanowska, Ewa; Kotzian, Joanna; Pancewicz, Magdalena
In Poland a low rate of employment of people with disabilities persists (the employment rate for people of working age (18–59/64) who are legally certified as disabled is 23.7% (2016)). The key actors in this area are employers, whose attitudes and involvement largely shape the availability and type of job vacancies for people with disabilities. The article presents research results on companies and institutions from the open labour market that have good practices in employing disabled workers. These are the results of a survey carried out in 100 organizations in Poland, 10 case studies carried out in organizations in Poland, and 10 case studies in other European countries. Conclusions from research on Poland indicate the importance of economic instruments in supporting employment of disabled people, but also their limited impact. The biggest barrier are negative stereotypes and prejudices on the part of employers and employees, rooted in the dominant patterns of behaviour in society. The study of good practices in organizations employing disabled employees in Poland and other countries shows that it is important for them to have a culture open to people with disabilities and other categories of employees. It is reflected in the values, standards and beliefs shared by employers and employees, as well as in organizational culture and management methods.

The first academic discourse about dwarfism in the eighteenth century on the example of the dwarf of Lunéville
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Durbas, Małgorzata
In the conventional wisdom of the Enlightenment the topic of dwarfism as a medical disorder was not present. Dwarfs were sought after for and highly valued at European aristocratic and royal courts, but they stayed at the margins of social life because of their body build. The aim of this article is to discuss the first academic research connected with dwarfism on the example of King Stanislaw Leszczynki's dwarf in Lunéville. Nicolas Ferry, known as Bébé, like other dwarfs during the trend of that time was a mascot of courtiers, up to his death at the age of 23 by the King's side in the palace. The King, upset by the death of his prematurely aged pupil Bébé, ordered his doctors to examine the corpse. Part of the research material was sent to Paris to the Cabinet of Natural History (Cabinet d'Histoire Naturelle du Roi) of Count de Buffon, who started an examination. The case of the dwarf Bébé was described in the series Histoire naturelle... of 12 volumes in the section onquadrupeds. From the point of view of cultural controversies about dwarfism – nowadays treated as a disease in the medical model of disability – the case is an important question because it shows the beginning of the process of departing from the beliefs of the eighteenth century towards the first anatomical academic research.

The unwanted »royal disease« - evolution of thinking about schizophrenia and its presence in social awareness
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Steliga, Anna
Schizophrenia is one of the most severe mental disorders. It is called the »royal disease« due to the wealth of sensations and experiences of the patient. In a so-called »healthy« society there is very little tolerance for otherness, nor space for people with mental disabilities. This is primarily for fear of what is incomprehensible and unfamiliar. Oftentimes patients are marginalized and stigmatized. This article is an attempt to »undemonize« schizophrenia in the general public consciousness. The author does this by describing the disorder itself as well as affected individuals who through their artistic creativity let us into their world, making it more accessible and understandable.

The image of illness in Veit Stoss's works of art
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Dębicki, Jacek
The article takes up the issue of ideological connections between the philosophy of man developed in the 15th century by the Cracovian masters from the Universitatis Cracoviensis and Cracovian Gothic art, above all the sculptures created by Veit Stoss in his Cracovian period. The German master-carver showed in his Cracovian Altarpiece a vast range of individual portrait-studies, realistic and naturalistic in character. During the Cracovian period some essential transformations took place in Veit Stoss's oeuvre. He created naturalistic portrait-studies unknown in the European art of the time, depicting even pathological changes, such as cancerous skin lesions, which Stoss perceived on the human body. We have known – on the basis of archival sources – that Veit Stoss maintained friendly contacts with Jan of Głogów, author of the treatise Physionomia hincinde ex illustribus scriptoribus per venerabilem virum magistrum Joannem Glogoviensem diligentissime recol lecta, printed in Kraków in 1518. I wish to prove that the content of this treatise – including the issue of skin diseases – found its reflection in the art of one of the leading sculptors of the late medieval Europe.

The influence of religion on public awareness of environmental issues in Europe and the Pacific: a comparative study of the Catholic Christian churches in Poland and Fiji
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Young, William
Many argue that climate change and environmental issues of this present day has been the direct or indirect result of man's greed and unsustainable use of natural resources. These extremities were made more intense after the industrial revolution and the introduction of a more mechanised developing economy. In all these changes happening today, getting the right stakeholders on board is crucial. The study honed in on Catholic parishioners' perceptions and aspirations on their church's stance towards environmental issues in the developing and developed countries, with interest of the Catholic churches in Poland and Fiji. Results show that various disparities occur in both countries mainly due to historical events, economical might, tradition, leadership and political affiliations. What is important for such studies in both situations is identifying the opportunities which can be can be learned from these complexities.
