Wstęp. Aktywność, podmiotowość, tożsamość – osoby z niepełnosprawnościami w społecznych przestrzeniach życia codziennego
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Niedbalski, Jakub; Racław, Mariola
This introduction is intended to outline the topics of a special issue on the notions of activity, subjectivity and identity of people with disabilities. The matters concerning disability, both in the scientific discourse and social perception, are constantly under discussion and broad analysis, thus the different perspectives and ways of addressing them. While crucial but also somewhat opposite to each other are the medical and social models of disability. There is a biopsychological model in between them, which assigns an individual with an active subject role having some characteristics of biological and psychological nature, as well as those related to the social functioning of that individual. A key to this approach is an action called empowerment, meaning the process of regaining an individual’s self-confidence and self-awareness. Identity grows here on awareness of one’s own physicality and mental potential, and it is related to the notion of subjectivity, which is expressed by freedom and functioning autonomy of persons with disabilities in various life spheres. This includes the possibilities to play different social roles related to cultural patterns and their implementation, e.g. a student, a worker, a parent, a spouse, etc. Therefore, the issue incorporates theoretical and empirical texts on the matters of subjectivity and identity of persons with disability, referring to, among other things, such activities as education, work, or participation in the broadly understood culture.
Praca zawodowa w życiu osób z chorobą nowotworową
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Pluta, Magdalena
Cancer is a serious health, social and economic problem. Due to the advancement of medicine, the number of people who are cured and have to face taking up or returning to work increases. The article indicates the place and role of professional work in the lives of people with cancer, the problems they face after returning to work, and signals possible ways of solving them. The text is enriched with fragments of online asynchronous interviews with women with cancer (n=10), and some interpretations. Research shows that professional work brings many benefits for the sick, but at the same time causes them to experience many difficulties. Both patients and employers lack knowledge about the possibilities of support, intervention measures are rarely taken, and the assistance offered by the state is insufficient. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement measures to support patients and their employers in the work process.
Wolontariusz niepełnosprawny - z potrzeby własnej czy myślenia o innych
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Król, Katarzyna M.
»The most immutable and significant question of life is: What do you do for others?« (Martin Luther King Jr). This is the essence of volunteering, which involves conscious and selfless work for the community, it is showing help, but also a lesson in asking for it. The answer to this question is not easy, especially for a disabled person. The purpose of the article is to try to answer the question whether a disabled person can also be a donor of voluntary activities, and not just their recipient. Social participation, related volunteers is an attempt to answer the questions: what factors, procedures or mechanisms are behind undertaking social activity or lack of it, whether volunteering activity of disabled people is a desirable way out of the circle of excluded people.
Być pracownikiem z zespołem Downa. Dobre praktyki wsparcia aktywności zawodowej trójmiejskich projektów »Przystanek Szekspir« i »Szekspir na Start«
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Woynarowska, Agnieszka A.
The article showcases good practices supporting professional activity of people with Down's syndrome, who take an active part in the various ventures undertaken as part of the »Przystanek Szekspir« and »Szekspir na Start« projects, carried out in the Tri-City. In order to reconstruct the activities, relations and meanings of the work experience manifested in the space of the projects, the author carried out a research project using the ethnographic method as its methodological framework. The study material was collected by means of observations, in-depth interviews, ethnographic interviews and field notes. In the paper, the author offers answers to the following questions regarding a number of issues: How are the presented professional activity projects carried out? What happens within these projects? What meanings do employees with Down's syndrome assign to their work experience? How is these employees' work perceived by their colleagues, job coaches and employers?
Institutionalized chaos instead of independent living. Forced modernization and assistant services in Poland
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2020) Szawarska, Dorota; Giermanowska, Ewa; Racław, Mariola
Personal assistance for people with disabilities in Poland is not available as part of a comprehensive state policy. There is a lack of a national strategy for independent living and a plan for deinstitutionalisation of support services. A disabled person as an independent entity seems to be invisible to legislators, despite the postulates regarding »tailor-made« services in public discourse. Uncoordinated changes are taking place regarding support for people with disabilities, including assistance services. They are partly forced by Poland's ratification (2012) of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, partly due to innovations of NGOs. Authors analyse the factors responsible for the current state of affairs in the context of theory of imposed modernization, emphasizing the superficiality of institutional changes. The limitations of the model of personal assistance services as services including disabled people in the mainstream of social life is also discussed.
