Opowiadanie w społecznym układzie stołu - analiza konwersacyjna spotkań rodzinnych
(2015) Rancew-Sikora, Dorota
The storytelling approach is a new chapter in the study of linguistic activity. The research does not focus on the content nor structure of the finished verbal products, but rather on an analysis of processes by which stories are created and performed in particular social contexts. Within this approach in recent years a trend to study small stories has evolved, one which is especially concerned with interactional and pragmatic roles of stories in social relations and for shaping the social identities of the participants. The purpose of this article is to examine in detail and present the processes of small story production in the situation of gatherings of families and their guests at the table. It is aimed at discovering some aspects of social organization and the social importance of small stories told at the table. Stories are treated here as parts of the “table culture”, complementary to other important elements of this social setting. The theoretical grounding for the investigations is in conversation analysis. The empirical material includes 82 sequences of storytelling at the table.

Powieść autobiograficzna jako dokument osobisty i podobny do pamiętników konkursowych materiał badań socjologicznych
(2015) Kubera, Jacek
The article presents selected arguments in favor of treatment of autobiographical novels in sociology as personal documents. Firstly, the assumptions of the biographical method (or biographical perspective) are demonstrated. All of them can be applied in social sciences analysis using both diaries (autobiographies, memories) written in competitions organized by sociologists and autobiographical novels published in the book market. As it is known, the tradition of research on competition diaries is related to the names of sociologists such as F. Znaniecki, J. Chalasinski, W. Grabski, L. Krzywicki, J. Szczepanski and Z. Dulczewski. Secondly, the author of the article makes an attempt to answer why autobiographical novels can be used in social science research. For this purpose, the author points out the similarities between both of the above-mentioned types of narration. At the end, it is presented why the probability criterion (met by both the competition diaries and autobiographical novels) is the most important feature in the study of personal documents. This criterion gives the researcher the opportunity to discuss, among others, the attitudes and values of social categories which include the author of the document and which also are described in the document.

Fenomenologiczna jedność doświadczenia psychodelicznego - analiza treści trip raportów
(2015) Garczewski, Piotr
The subject of the present paper is to focus on the psychedelic experience, perceived by the author as a coherent, repeatable phenomenon. This was enabled by analyzing stories collected from people who admitted to using specific psychoactive substances. The author was inspired by a group of University of Harvard researchers who were actively involved in the American counter-culture of the 1960s. This group attempted to explain the following phenomenon using Eastern philosophy and religion. In contradiction to this idea, the author proposes a different method based on Western traditions of philosophy and social sciences.

Digital storytelling: creative writing as a form of participation in literary culture
(2015) Stetkiewicz, Lucyna
Digital storytelling on the website Lubimyczytac.pl contributes to an increase in the reading public, to active participation in literary discourse, and to the change of passive consumers of popular culture into active agents of the field of literature. With the use of the anthropological approach and the tool of virtual ethnography, one sub-segment of this website is investigated to find out how one communication media (printed books) enhances both creative writing and reading itself, and how the latter cultural pattern is promoted.

Diabeł gardzienicki - diabeł opowieści : proces opowiadania jako figura dyskursu społecznego
(2015) Kapusta, Anna
On the 20th May of 2012 in Gardzienice village near Lublin, during my fieldwork, I conducted an interview. An integral part of it is the analysis of the story „The Devil of the XXI Century”. This story, a personal narrative, symbolically encodes the local social conflict between the „Gardzienice Theatre” and the village people of Gardzienice and it refers to the tradition of the demonology of the Lublin Region. This story - a personal myth - is in this perspective an empirical indicator of the Storyteller’s social status. The „Devil” is the central, symbolic mediator of this story, because it visualizes the narrative signal of the social conflict, which is communicated by the Storyteller in his story. The article presents the study of the social poetics and shows the hypothesis that the process of the storytelling is the figure of the local discourse of the conflict.

Arnold Gehlen jako anty-Rousseau
(2015) Szklarska, Anna
The article makes an attempt to explain if Arnold Gehlen was reasonable in defining himself as anti-Rousseau, and also why this famous German thinker considered Jean Jacques Rousseau, who lived two centuries earlier, his greatest philosophical opponent. Gehlen thought that the tendency towards degeneration is primal for human beings. Therefore in his opinion people need institutions to redirect the excesses of the consuming impulse and the sexual impulse: there is a need to stabilize what is excessive and unstable in humans. For Gehlen there is a reason for this exceptionally pessimistic view on humankind, which is by nature prone to degradation. The German philosopher is driven by the need to justify the institutions, which if questioned, cannot save us from oncoming chaos. The main context for the author’s analysis are different ways of perceiving and understanding the spheres of nature and culture and their interference with human existence by such philosophers as Rousseau, Gehlen, Arendt, and Rand. For Gehlen, culture is not a natural state. It needs maintenance, it is constantly endangered, and its fall is inevitably connected with the fall of institutions. The anti-Rousseau philosophy proclaims a return to culture. It is also explained what hides behind Gehlen’s thesis, which states that we live in times that are culturally unproductive and that contemporary civilization reveals all the weaknesses of human nature.

Pogrzeb bohatera kulturowego jako wydarzenie medialne - przyczynek do analizy mitycznych opowieści o życiu i śmierci znanych postaci
(2015) Ciołkiewicz, Paweł
The following text offers a preliminary analysis of stories about mythical heroes. The author’s attention is focused not on ancient myths and legends, but on contemporary stories about well-known persons which appear in media after their deaths. These considerations concern television broadcasts of the funerals of Pope John Paul II (2005), Michael Jackson (2009) and Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria (2010). The main questions are: what kind of stories were told about these three men during the ceremonies, and what was the role played by mythical narrative structures? Initially, the author presents Joseph Campbell’s concept of monomyth. Theory of media event is then discussed as a theoretical framework for three stories about cultural heroes. In the main part of the article the author analyses three addresses given during these funeral ceremonies. These addresses are treated as stories about cultural heroes, which reflect the structure of Campbell’s monomyth.

Kwiaty ciała i krwi - wokół mitu filmów snuff
(2015) Dudziński, Przemysław; Głownia, Dawid
The subject of this article is a social history of the myth of snuff movies (movies depicting real torture and murder distributed commercially). This myth is described as an urban legend circulating in film culture, especially American, since 1970. The snuff-movie myth was created by moral panic caused by saturation of mainstream culture with pornography and images of sex and violence, but in later stages of its lifecycle different variants of this urban legend surfaced. There are two main reasons for the longevity of the snuff-movie myth: its usefulness in certain cultural wars and the rapid technological progress in the creation and distribution of homemade movies.

O niektórych strategiach kształtowania opinii i percepcji w recenzji filmowej
(2015) Topa-Bryniarska, Dominika Maria
The aim of this study is to analyse the discourse as a way of using language for specific purposes. Therefore, this paper attempts to identify the manner in which discursive and communicative strategies are created in contemporary film reviews (2011–2012). The research is based on the corpus consisting of forty French articles from the web pages of different film magazines and portals, describing the famous French comedy 'Intouchables' (2011). The mentioned strategies refer to one of the stages of development of global meaning in the discourse by journalists selecting and categorising the information they wish to provide to their addressees. Since media discourse (in particular, opinion-forming press) reject the simple reference, the analysis focuses on the description and categorisation of three strategies, used in order to identify events, objects and people, activating the hidden and connotative meanings, i.e. various types of misinformation caused by implications, presuppositions, cultural associations. The strategies contribute to the co-creation of human ways of thinking by introducing the audience to the conceptual universe of the addresser.
