Urban sprawl versus the compact city in the context of spatial policy
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Rogatka, Krzysztof; Sylla, Marta
The aim of this article is to present the multidimensional phenomenon of urban sprawl in relation to the concept of the compact city and spatial policy. Intensive urbanization, which leads to spatial, social, environmental and cultural changes, has been observed in Polish cities and peri-urban areas for many years. The authors distinguish between the negative aspects of urban sprawl and the positive implications of the compact city. Spatial planning should be considered as a tool to manage urban and rural areas. In Poland the spatial planning system consists of three levels: national, regional, and local. It is assumed that spatial policy that contributes to improving cities according to the concept of the compact city can lead to a formation of sustainable urban structure in which society, economy, nature and cultural heritage harmoniously coexist. The case study of Nowe Zerniki estate in Wroclaw is analyzed. Nowe Zerniki exemplifies the concept of the compact city and the brownfield investment ideas that can contribute to the transformation into a sustainable city. It also provides a model for creating modern urban development in accordance with the current architectural, urban, environmental and social requirements.

Od fabryki butów do fabryki wiedzy. Przykład przekształceń funkcjonalnych i społeczno-kulturowych terenów (dawnej) garbarni Buchholza w Bydgoszczy
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Jeran, Agnieszka; Muszyńska-Jeleszyńska, Dominika
The area in the bend of the Brda in Bydgoszcz, which is the portion of the district Okole, now occupies the campus of the University of Economy in Bydgoszcz, food company Colian Sp. with o.o. Bydgoszcz (formerly »Jutrzenka« Colian, Division No. 3) and the newly arising Nordic Haven (residential and commercial property). These are inner city brownfields located at the confluence of the so-called Old Bydgoszcz Canal and the River Brda, the stretch of Solidarity Bridges towards the Bridge of Queen Jadwiga. History of the district Okole is directly related to the economic development of Bydgoszcz, which occurred in connection with the construction of the Bydgoszcz Canal and later a major rail line and the location of large industrial plants. These projects were aimed by the German authorities to improve the Bydgoszcz junction of water-rail-road, as an internal communications center. Based on the conversion of functions of this area will be illustrated the conversion of industrial space in academic and recreational space. The idea and the main assumptions adopted revitalization activities are based on a holistic, integrated approach to the revitalization process. The objective of the planned work and regeneration was the restoration and development of the center-functions, including the continuity of the historical heritage associated with this area. Because degraded shoe factory buildings were taken over and revitalized by a college, it can be concluded that these areas still function as productive. But whereas previously, in the industrial economy and in accordance with the standards of industrial society, it was the production and distribution of products, now in the knowledge society it is making knowledge, or rather the enrichment and development of human capital and also its distribution in the minds and activities of graduates.

Dostępność powstających i rewitalizowanych obiektów muzealnych dla osób niepełnosprawnych na przykładzie obszaru Zabłocia w Krakowie
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Żuchowska-Skiba, Dorota
The changing urban space occupies an important place in the eyes of people with disabilities in society today. Social definitions of disability carry responsibility for the marginalization of people with disabilities from the inadequacy of the individual arising from their physical deficits, to the level of macrosocial in changing attitudes, negative stereotypes and removing barriers in public space and social. The main aim of this article is therefore to show the relationship between the availability of specific urban space for the disabled, and made contemporary post-industrial revitalization areas. These investments are carried out in an era when human rights and equal access to space in the city are to be borne by the active environment are disabled and legitimation in the legal acts adopted by our country. Therefore, using the examples chosen deliberately wanted to show how the transformed spaces are available for disabled people. The analysis also took into account what are the functions of these areas today to see contemporary spaces of exclusion of people with disabilities in the postmodern city.

(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2015) Gawron, Grzegorz
Many Silesian cities and their districts still has strong traces of the industrial past, which often show their spatial and social degradation. This industrial inheritance and difficult process of restructuring has set a serious challenge for local governments. The answer for it is the search for new solutions and scenarios which should have introduced a new quality of life and functioning of the local community. One of the interesting projects in this area were design workshops »Design in the field«. Their uniqueness was based on the combined creative potential of designers and residents of selected cities to find a new solutions to meet local needs and problems.
