Netflix – the curation of taste and the business of diversification
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2021) Higson, Andrew
Netflix is considered as a global business invested in strategies of diversification, localisation and personalisation in light of several discourses about the streaming service. One presents Netflix as an evil corporation encouraging binge-watching and reducing individuals to data. A utopian discourse proclaims the democratising potential of digital media technologies, including Netflix’s claims about its personalised, on-demand service. An industry discourse laments Netflix’s disruption of the film and television business. Finally, a scholarly discourse maps the political economy and cultural impact of Netflix. Each discourse attaches a particular cultural value to Netflix. Some offer »antidotes«, including the niche streamers, with their »curated« collections of specialised content. Both types of streamer are in fact gatekeepers regulating access to cultural experiences and promoting particular ideas of taste and diversity. Netflix’s strategies of customisation and glocalisation, and its activities in the Middle East and North Africa, demonstrate in the end that diversity is good for business.
Ratunek dla gospodarki czy zagrożenie ze Wschodu? Ukraińcy w nagłówkach »Gazety Wrocławskiej«
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2021) Skibińska, Anna
The aim of the article was to examine how a regional portal tells the stories about the Ukrainian migrants living in Lower Silesia. The objective of the research was the articles with the headlines in which the lexeme »Ukrainian« is present. The chronological scope covered media statements published on www.gazetawroclawska.pl in 2019. The previous research on the linguistic image of an Ukrainian in the Polish language led to the conclusion that Polish-Ukrainian relations are strongly historically conditioned and often inscribed in a three-part opposition: an Alien – Other – A Local boy. As a result of content analysis, typical headline constructions were decoded, announcing texts about Ukrainians on the website of »Gazeta Wrocławska«. The dominant functions of headlines, the linguistic means used there, the lemmas with the highest frequency and the stereotypes were determined. Referring to the issue of familiarity and foreignness and noticing the ethno-stereotypes about the Ukrainians in the analysed media messages, a diversified image of Ukrainian migrants was reestablished – presented as victims, a threat but also an opportunity.
Quizy – od teleturniejów do internetowej rozrywki
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2021) Kwiatkowska, Anita Helena
Quizzes have become an inseparable element of the media landscape. They can be found in the number of titles of newspapers and magazines, radio contests and, in particular, in television game shows. Nowadays quizzes are also more and more observable in virtual space. Virtual quizzes, however, avoid an attempt of a simple definition, e.g. due to the genre differences present in other media. After the adoption of the media studies and historical perspective in this article, two media environments – television and the Internet – were presented, in which quizzes had an opportunity to achieve a popularity. The market of the internet quizzes and its typology were also characterized.
Asisted living institutions as the basis of order and a form of behaviour control from the perspective of Erving Goffman’s systems theory
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2021) Zbyrad, Teresa Jadwiga
Assisted living institutions such as nursing homes were established to answer a vital social need. Such services are needed by the elderly, disabled, and chronically ill. The social demand for these institutions is growing due to a deficit of care functions in families, among other factors. Undoubtedly, assisted living institutions play a vital role by providing help and assistance to less-independent individuals, and for many, they are a chance for survival or a dignified life because they offer food and shelter. However, nursing homes as assisted living institutions are not limited to satisfying the needs of their residents. There is something surprising and worrying about their functioning. To use R.K. Merton’s terminology, they operate according to latent functions that maintain social order and social control. To better understand the problem, it is worth looking at Erving Goffman’s popular theory of total institutions and Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory.
Postać lekarza w kontekście pełnionych ról zawodowych
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2021) Lebowa, Weronika Marzena
The aim of the paper is to present the professional roles and competences of a physician determined by its profession. To achieve my assumption, the answer to the question about the roles played by a doctor in both work and external environments - within a family and media – turned out to be useful. One must add that a medical profession of a physician was a cohesive point of all the points discussed in the study. The methods applied to this research were the analysis and critical view of the professional literature concerning the issues of doctors' activities in the prism of the roles resulting from the profession. The considerations made in the article reveal an image of a doctor qualified in a care of a patient, involved in educating younger generations of medical doctors, conducting research in order to broaden professional knowledge, understanding the need to cultivate health-promoting behaviors among patients, and taking care of good contact with patients. The doctor in relation to the patient should demonstrate both a high level of professional competence, concentrating to diagnosing a disease and implementing an appropriate treatment, as well as the so-called soft skills, manifested in communication skills and a friendly approach to the patient.
