Kapitał społeczny w europejskich welfare states
    (Wydawnictwa AGH, 2012) Masłyk, Tomasz
The crisis of public finances in European countries, makes the idea of the welfare state is exposed to particularly harsh criticism today. It is not limited to emphasize the lack of effectiveness of these institutions. Also emphasizes the negative impact of welfare state institutions to the third sector - reducing the areas of civic activity, and thus, elimination of natural resources to generate social capital. Referring to this problem, the objective of this article is to present the facts - the abundance of social capital at the disposal of citizens representing five types of welfare states: Anglo-Saxon, Continental Conservative, Social Democratic, Post-communist and Southern European. The measurement of social capital was carried out taking into account its three dimensions: trust (individual and institutional), civic activity (bonding and bridging capital) and satisfaction with life (individual and institutional). The empirical analysis is based on data from studies earned out in 2010 under the European Social Survey.

Partycypacja społeczna czynnikiem rozwoju powiatu? Analiza opinii urzędników wybranych samorządów powiatowych województwa świętokrzyskiego
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2012) Migaczewska, Ewa; Masłyk, Tomasz
The article attempts to summarize one of the topics explored in the research grant entitled »Civilizational development of sub-national communities and local government processes and the institutionalization of social and economic participation in Poland«. The main subject of discussion undertaken in this article is the category of civic participation described by local government officials of two districts: skarżyski and staszowski in Świętokrzyskie voivodeship. Our aim is to present how the local government officials understand the essence of civic participation and its importance for the development of the region. Information received from local government officials, who were interviewed, also help to reconstruct pattern of behavior of (non)subjectivity of the citizens. This pattern is formed by client attitudes which dominated over attitudes of commitment and social participation. In result social participation can not be regarded as an important factor in stimulating the development of the region.
