The development of a sensor system for monitoring the displacement of horizontal laterals in Radial Drilling Technology
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Ziaja, Jan; Movčan, Vasil'
Radial drilling technology was developed by Rad Tech international inc., an American company set up by Henk Jelsma, its permanent head and the technology patent holder. First introduced in the Americas, radial drilling technology acquired wide recognition in the USA and Colombia and later found applications in Canada, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and the Middle East. In general, this technology is aimed at extending and improving drainage areas in productive formations. Other applications of radial drilling include the creation of specifically directed injection channels and exploration activities. Performance testing of these short radius laterals has not been adequately studied and significant questions remain about how well these technologies can deliver on their promises. The main objective of the paper is to sum up previous experience in developing a system for monitoring the displacement of horizontal laterals and wells, and examining a prospective new technology which can increase the efficiency of radial drilling.

Pulling force simulation of jet bits in radial drilling technology
    (2016) Ziaja, Jan; Movčan, Vasil'
Radial drilling technology, of which the jet bit is the key device, is a research focus in the field of oil drilling and production. This paper shows mechanical equations for jet bits and analyzes the behavior of water while passing the jet bit. Were set up few important conclusions. The generation of the pulling force is mainly due to the inlet pressure of the jet bit; the backward jets can significantly increase not only the pulling force but also the stability of jet bits. The pulling force would reach 311 N while sumilation, which can steadily pull the high-pressure hose forward

Total Specific Energy (TSE) as a new indicator of drilling efficiency
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Toczek, Przemysław; Wiśniowski, Rafał; Stryczek, Stanisław; Ziaja, Jan; Mazur, Chrystian
Knowing the data from drilling works which had been carried out in a given area gives the opportunity to develop the next borehole with great precision. An important element of the design is to analyze and interpret data in detail, which can be used during the following drilling process. Based on a literature analysis, certain methods of the selection of drill bits have been indicated. Mechanic specific energy curves of drill bits applied in drilling works in northern Poland have been compared. The drilling works took place in the Precambrian platform. The compared mechanic specific energy curves were calculated with the use of R. Teale and H. Rabia equations. A relation between mechanical specific energy and pressure loss in polycrystalline diamond compact drill bits was determined. New drilling ratio TSE - Total Specific Energy which considers hydraulic power energy in the nozzles of the drill bit was calculated.

Porównanie metod uzdatniania mechanicznego popiołu lotnego wapiennego
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2024) Ziaja, Jan; Szerszeń, Krzysztof
The article compares two methods of mechanical treatment the physical parameters of calcareous fly ash which can be used on an industrial scale. The main purpose of using these methods is to increase the share of ash in the binder/slurry used in geoengineering. The tests were carried out for ash samples obtained from the Bełchatów Power Plant. Grinding and sieving methods were used for the treatment. The scope of the research included the chemical composition of the ash, density and the degree of grinding – defined by the specific surface according to Blaine. The granulometric distribution and characteristic sizes such as the residue on the 0.090 mm sieve and fineness were also of the study. To determine the impact of ash milling on its physical properties, the ash-cement mixtures in the proportions of 30/70 and 70/30 were used, and the determinants were the results of water demand tests and the activity index. The significant improvement in the physical parameters of calcareous fly ash was achieved in both processes compared to the sample in its natural state.

Influence of fluidal ashes from lignite on technological properties of slurries based on G-class drilling cements
(2013) Stryczek, Stanisław; Gonet, Andrzej; Wiśniowski, Rafał; Złotkowski, Albert; Ziaja, Jan
New generation fly ashes are a produced during coal combustion in fluidized bed furnaces with simultaneous sulphur removal from the gas. This process is held at temperature of about 850 degrees of Celsius. The generated ashes basically differ in their physicochemical properties from traditional silica ashes. Fluidal ashes produced during lignite combustion consist of active puzzolana in the form of dehydrated clayey minerals and active components activating the process of hydration of, e.g. $CaO$, anhydrite II and $CaCO_{3}$ ashes. The paper presents the results of laboratory analyses of the influence of ashes coming from the combustion of lignite on technological properties of fresh and set sealing slurries based on drilling cement.

Features of drilling and improving the quality of well cementing in conditions of abnormally low reservoir pressures
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2024) Stavychnyi, Yevhen; Femiak, Yaroslav; Vytyaz, Oleg; Ziaja, Jan
An overview and actuality of oil and gas production are provided. The article reviews the mining and geological features of the Verkhnyomaslovetske field of PJSC “Ukrnafta”. It is established that this field belongs to the category of fields with hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves. It is shown that the main complication in well drilling is the absorption of drilling mud. Attention is focused on the tasks and implemented solutions for well production casing. It has been established that the lack of necessary and inconsistency plugging materials to cementing conditions causes absorption of the grouting mortar, resulting in defects in the work and the need for additional time and financial costs to eliminate them. At the same time, it is difficult to estimate the extremely negative impact of grouting mortar absorption on the filtration and capacitance characteristics of the formation. The main parameters of the grouting mortar that caused its absorption are analysed. A new lightweight plugging material with a cement batter density of 1.25 g/cm3 was developed. The main parameters of the grouting mortar and stone based on the developed plugging material were investigated and tested in accordance with the thermobaric and technological conditions of cementing a typical well of the Verkhnyomaslovetske field. The obtained results of research make it possible to improve the quality of casing support under abnormally low reservoir pressures (ALRP) conditions at the Verkhnyomaslovetske field, as well as, in the future, at other fields with related mining and geological conditions.

Comparative analysis of technological efficiency of oil production intensification in carbonate collector. Advantages of the technology of radial drilling
    (2015) Ziaja, Jan; Movčan, Vasil'
The paper presents a comparative analysis of the results of radial drilling, drilling perforation, cumulative reperforation and acid treatment. The study was focused at carbonate deposits in Russia. For each technology average incremental oil rates were estimated at the same exploration targets. The analysis of technological effectiveness in the given geologic and physical conditions revealed that drilling perforation and radial drilling allow reaching higher incremental oil rates compared to acid treatment and cumulative perforation. This fact confirms effectiveness of drilling radial canals by enlarging infiltration area. For the sake of completion radial drilling and drilling perforation are performed in the same wells. To reveal limiting conditions of applying radial drilling and drilling perforation an effectiveness analysis is made depending on the thickness of the interlayers exposed. To formulate criteria of radial exposing applicability an analysis of effects of different geological and physical formation parameters on geological and engineering operations effectiveness is done. The following parameters are considered: relation between the current formation pressure and initial formation pressure, formation permeability, skin factor, thickness of interlayers in overall perforation interval, thickness of interlayers exposed by radial canals.

Calculation of critical forces accompanying the installation of a high-pressure gas pipeline in Mrzygłód, with trenchless HDD technology
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2019) Ziaja, Jan; Janicki, Jacek; Walczak, Paweł
The basic element providing the safety of HDD drilling jobs is properly selected pull force and torque. They also have an effect on the time of the realization of the wellbore and the cost of the investment. The professional literature offers a number of algorithms according to which the theoretically maximal installation force can be calculated. The calculated installation force values are presented in this paper, referring to some of the procedures used globally, and compared with the actual force encountered in practice. Real geological and drilling conditions are accounted for in the calculations. They are juxtaposed with the real forces recorded while installing a DN 1000, MOP 8.4 MPa gas pipeline. The discrepancies in the analytical results are explained. The paper closes with some conclusions and recommendations.
