General purpose of the doctoral thesis here presented was to define optimum machining conditions for sintered WPW carbon materials mostly used as a facing cover of metallurgical furnaces. SGL Carbon Poland SA Racibórz mostly use the WPW-65 carbon material. Almost $60\%$ of its product are made of the WPW-65. To carry out certain amount of cutting test it was necessary to built an experimental unit based on special adaptation of vertical milling machine. Special Kistler dynamometer to the machine table was attached and the cutting force $F_{c}$. tool displacement "x" were recorded (that last by means of laser vibrometer). while the chip formation with high speed camera was recorded. The aim of this study was to determine how technological parameters such as depth of cut - $a_{p}$ and feed - f. as well as cutting angle $\gamma$ of attack tool influence chips formation, theirs granularity and finally - the energy of the process. The results obtained from the study were analyzed using DIAdem 10.2 and specially written software to plot the density distribution functions for energy of chips fragmentation and overall energy consumption. On the base of whole results and the linear programming method an optimum cutting conditions for sintered WPW - 65 carbon material were raised. Also a proposal of new methodology for machinability investigations of brittle materials was presented.
