Abstract

This doctoral dissertation investigates the effect of grain size on the mechanical properties and plasticity of technically pure magnesium (Mg 99.95%) over a temperature range from 298K down to 4K. The main objective was to identify the active deformation mechanisms at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions, with particular emphasis on the grain size regime in which grain boundary sliding (GBS) can be activated. The study was conducted on materials with an average grain size ranging from 9 µm to 0.9 µm, produced by direct extrusion. Mechanical properties were examined using uniaxial tension and compression tests performed at 298K, 78K, and 4K. Microstructural and crystallographic characterization was carried out using XRD, light microscopy, SEM, and EBSD techniques. At room temperature, a transition in deformation behaviour was observed when the grain size decreased below a critical value of approximately 3 µm, under both tension and compression. Activation of GBS in fine-grained materials results in reduced strain hardening, enhanced plasticity and breakdown of the linear Hall-Petch relationship. At cryogenic temperatures, regardless of grain size and loading direction, plastic deformation is governed by dislocation slip and twinning, accompanied by significantly reduced ductility and increased strength obeying the classical Hall-Petch behaviour.
