Abstract

Due to the unique wildlife of the Tatra Mountains the area was chosen as a suitable place for observation of the environment behavior under the stress conditions imposed by antropogenic pollutants (some heavy metals and radioactive caesium-137). The Tatra mountains environment is exposed to a number of pollutants like organic compounds, heavy metals and radioactive elements - a very specific group of pollutants. Special attention was paid to zinc, lead, cadmium, chromium and artificial caesium-137, the latter was introduced into the natural environment as a result of nuclear weapons tests and the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The most important fact is that heavy metals and radionuclides accumulate continuously in soils. Most heavy metals, including lead and cesium, have a strong tendency to bound with the surface soil layer (rich in organic matter) and they can be easily taken up by plants. The important task of the work was to determine the elements distribution in the Tatras’ soil and the fate of the elements in the environment. In this study the analysis of the spatial distribution of artificial $^{137}Cs$ in comparison to natural $^{40}K$ in the soil samples collected from the whole area of the Tatra Mountains was performed. Simultaneously, the spatial distribution of heavy metals ($Pb, Zn, Cd$ and $Cr$) in the soil samples taken from the Tatra Mountains was determined. As a result, the radiological situation of the region („caesium” maps of the Tatra mountains) was described. Since 2005 to 2010 the monitoring of $^{137}Cs$ activity in the soil samples of the selected areas of the Tatras’ was curried out.
