Abstract

Titanium dioxide with modified anion sublattice is a promising electrode material for Photoelectrochemical Cells (PEC) in which the solar energy to chemical energy conversion occurs. The methods of $TiO_{2}$ modification include incorporation of the nonstoichiometry in polycrystalline titanium dioxide $-TiO_{2-x}$, doping with nitrogen stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric of titanium dioxide (the magnetron sputtering process) – $TiO_{2}N$, as well as doping with oxygen of titanium nitride ¬– $TiN:O$. The effect of anion sublattice modification of thin films and polycrystalline titanium dioxide on chemical composition and structural, microstructural, optical, electrical and photoelectrochemical properties have been evaluated. The magnetron sputtering method with the optical plasma control allows to obtain thin films with the composition range $Ti-O-N$. Titanium nitride oxidation in air leads to crystallization of nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide $TiO_{2-x}N_{x}$. Depending on x parameter nonstoichiometric $TiO_{2-x}$ crystallize either in rutile or in the mixture of Magneli's phases. Photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that the best parameters of the PEC cell can be obtained for rutile phase with controlled nonstoichiometry x and nitrogen. The range of $TiN-TiO$ solid solutions formation has been proposed and ternary phase diagram of $Ti-O-N$ has been completed.
